This review is from: BonJour 10101-42 Creme Brulee Torch, Black (Kitchen)
I bought this torch as a gift for my wife, and neither of us are impressed with it after using it several times. First, it has a safety mechanism that is so hard to push down, you almost need to use a screwdriver (or something similar). It is so difficult to disengage the safety mechanism, that my wife often cannot do it. The second problem with this torch is that it is constantly going out, even though it is full of butane. Unfortunately, every time you want to light the torch, you must depress the safety, so it has turned out to be a real pain... If it stays lit (occasionally it does), it works great, but I don't think it is worth the effort.

For the price, the Bonjour cooking torch is rather serviceable, yet it does lack in some areas. The air flow adjustment, for example, cannot be locked into place and returns to the normal setting as soon as it is released, so cooks are basically stuck with a narrow, fine flame rather than being able to use the wider, softer heat necessary for some tasks. The safety lock also is somewhat counterintuitive, and my experience has been that the flame goes out for no reason at times, requiring the user to reset the safety and re-ignite the torch while in the middle of use. Finally, the flame produced, though working well for things like creme brulees, is not quite suitable for charring pepper skins and other uses one might want to apply a cooking torch to.The Bonjour cooking torch works; there's no denying that. However, most cooks will want a more reliable model and will be willing to pay the higher price required to get one. Still, if all you want is to make creme brulee, this torch should suffice.

Works just fine,

After reading the bad reviews, I was hesitant to buy this. But it works just fine. The flame is perfect for crème brulée, and it stays lit both when I hold the button down and when I use the continuous flame feature. I'm pleased.

I own this torch and I have no problems with it at all. Sometimes I have to tweak the little slider that adjusts the gas flow in order to get the torch to stay lit, but once it's lit for a few seconds I can adjust the slider as appropriate. Perhaps the people having so many problems just aren't taking the time to use it properly, because it works great for me.

Not perfect for Creme Brulee, but it's a GREAT Cigar Lighter.,

I was given this as a gift. Honestly, if I make Creme Brulee I just use a propane torch to brown the top. I get a lot more heat output and the job is done really fast.
But I have found a use for this little guy. It makes a GREAT cigar lighter. Don't hold the cigar in your mouth, that would mean pointing the flame at your face. But if you hold the cigar in one hand and toast the foot of the cigar with the other hand this little torch works great. So yeah, I like it. I just don't use it in my kitchen.

This product is garbage,

This product simply does not work and the instructions are terrible. The torch will not light. It is a total waste of money and I'm very surprised it's carried by Bed and Bath. Don't buy it. I would give this 0 stars if that was possible.

Best torch value,

I bought this torch in spite of some of the negative reviews because I actually tried it in a store. It was well made and had an easy to light trigger and consistent flame. Not sure what other folks were doing wrong. But I found it to be very good and easy to use. Very good value too! I recommend.

The article, "Perfecting Creme Brulee" in the Nov-Dec 2001 of Cook's Illustrated, led me to the Microtorch by Roburn. After much searching I found it at Lee Valley. It has a built-in ignition trigger that does not need to be held down for the torch to remain lit. Very happy. 5 Stars.

This is a piece of garbage. The torch will not stay lit for more than a few seconds. When it is lit, the flame is weak, even at the highest setting. Please, for the love of God, do not waste your money on this "product." A bic disposable lighter would work just as well. Heck, a 100 watt bulb might work better.
