Plastic. For those of you trying to avoid it touching your coffee, I have done you some legwork! I called the manufacturer before ordering this product and they claimed there was no plastic on the plunger. Well, this is technically true as all plunging parts are stainless steel, but the lid liner which comes down over the spout and has an additional, unnecessary screen IS plastic. The good news is all you have to do is unscrew the top ball, take the lid off and pull out the whole plastic piece. Then reassemble and you have a TRULY plastic-free pot! For others who are saying it is hard to clean, like all french presses, you must unscrew the bottom portion of the plunger and run water over all the screens. After it is dry, reassemble. It is simple and not a big deal. I can't imagine trying to clean it altogether! And for others still who say it isn't a thermos, well, is that what you expected? This item keeps the coffee hot for about an hour. It's biggest plus is that it won't crack like the glass ones. If you are sick of breaking and replacing the glass carafes in your other french presses and you don't want plastic, this is a great little pot. I made my first pot of coffee in it this morning after removing the plastic top and it worked great, just like the one I bought in Italy 2 years ago for $30 more (still using that one, it is for my husband, and now, after breaking yet another glass one, I bought this one for me.)

I purchased this in January 2012... quite excited to have a french press that was insulated and that I expected to last. Just this week (at less than 4 months old) the handle fell off. Thank goodness it was not full of hot coffee!

other reviewer was correct about dripping when pouring first cup. Also, handle is not welded on, but glued on. Mine come off in about nine months. I will use some j-b weld to put handle back in place, but it will be relegated to camping gear.

I purchased this French Press less than (5) months ago, and have followed the 'care instructions' to a 'T', but this didn't keep the handle weld from failing! Although both welds pulled away from the body of the carafe, the bottom weld came completely off as I was taking it from the counter to the table. My 1 y/o niece was under-foot at the time (aren't little ones always under-foot?) but the sudden break of the handle's weld cause piping hot coffee to spill on her!

For the price I paid, I would expect more than (5) months use!

Bought this as a replacement for a "Starbucks" brand press and couldn't be happier. Unlike our previous insulated french press, this one has virtually no plastic and does not have any rubber pads. This means throwing it in the dishwasher is not a problem. Durability is excellent...like the all metal construction of the press - the "close" feature prevents bitter over brewing. Keeps coffee hot for 30 minutes and warm for an hour.

The good: dual-walled keeps coffee warm for a little while at least. Holds enough for a couple of typical sized coffee mugs. Well made and nice looking.

The bad: The spout is too small - coffee leaks all over when pouring. Coffee grounds get caught in the filter and are hard to get out. There is no way to tell which way the lid is facing when you pour. (whether the opening is towards the small spout, or back towards the handle). I had to paint a spot on the lid to know. Gives coffee a metallic taste in the beginning, but that seems to go away with use.

Just a really poor design overall.

This is a solid addition to the kitchen.
If you preheat it, it will keep coffee warm for about an hour; the top is not well insulated. Significantly better than the typical french press for keeping it warm, but nothing like a thermos.
The filter is a pain to clean because coffee grinds get caught between screen and metal piece.
These complaints are minor.

It's a lovely looking french press and does a good job at keeping the coffee hot. However, the strainer I found very difficult to clean and operate and eventually replaced the innards with an old plunger from another french press. I also find it's almost impossible to pour the first cup of coffee without some dripping onto the table. But on the plus side, I won't be replacing any glass carafes for a while.
