5.0 out of 5 stars Jon B no.1 Sydney Fan
Both Jon B's albums both have that creative edge which sets him apart from other current r'n'b artists. When I first heard Jon B in 95' I thought he was just trying too hard to sing like Babyface. 2.0 out of 5 stars (2-1/2 stars) Um...
When "Someone To Love" was first played on the radio, many people thought it was just Babyface singing, but it actually turned out to be then-newcomer Jon B. singing with the help of Babyface. That song was so smooth and mellow that it immediately made me buy this album. Well, never again will I make such a hasty purchase.

The only other really good song on this album...

Both Jon B's albums both have that creative edge which sets him apart from other current r'n'b artists. When I first heard Jon B in 95' I thought he was just trying too hard to sing like Babyface. Now I realise, after buying both his albums, that he is quite unique in some respects. Because his music crosses over jazz/hip hop/funk etc, I think that is the reason why he has risen above the rest. Also he is blesseed with a beautiful voice. After watching"N.Y Undercover" one day , & as fate would have it, Jon B made a guest appearance, & sung Stevie Wonder's "Mi Cherie Amour". With his good looks, & that rich, jazzy voice of his, what else can I say....he melted my heart. If you happen to read this Jon B, I hope you will pay us a visit in Australia. We would love to see you here because unfortunately not many R'n'B artists come down this way. Keep those tracks comin' & stay positive.

4.0 out of 5 stars More the genuine thing than a creation of the studio!, July 13, 2003
This review is from: Bonafide (Audio CD)
Although I am a fan of Justin Timberlake, the singer still comes across as an incarnation of a carefully designed plan at multi-ethnic success. In other words, Timberlake appeals to a cross-section of the popular music audience.

Jon B, on the other hand, has a fan base that is primarily urban and R & B. That is a testament to the singer's TRUE soulful delivery. He's not trying to be a "brutha"; he IS one with just a lighter "hue".

"Bonafide", his 1995 debut album, does bear a heavy influence from producer Babyface (with the album being executively produced by Tracy Edmonds and Michael McQuarn). Upon first listening, its difficult to distinguish Jon B from 'Face on the hit single "Someone to Love".

However, Jon B does exert his individuality on the playful "Simple Melody" (featuring guest Bootsy Collins), "Time After Time", "Isn't It Scary", and the final (and best) cut, "Love Don't Go".

Perhaps, his fourth release will garner the kind of success that his talent warrants. If not, however, his music will, no doubt, continue to be appreciated by those of us that have been entranced by the "bonafide" article.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool jazz, November 20, 2004
This review is from: Bonafide (Audio CD)
I'm a artist myself and especially a huge jazz lover. So I love everything that he did off this album. I love the title track that he did when he starts rapping, singing, and everything which blew me away first. Especially I like others like Simple Melody w/ Bootsy Collins, Love is Candi, Mystery 4 Two, Someone to Love (whom he dueted with Babyface which I love), Burning 4 Two, Pants Off, Time After Time and Love Don't Go (which is a cool standard w/ a lot of jazz flavor which reminds u of the old days of the big band era or so). Like to say this, BONAFIDE is a blend of jazz, r&b, hip-hop, rap and/or jazz-rap (which I recall), pop, and a lot of blues on the melody. This would go on and turn your mind for a long time. I actually bought it first since I listen few parts from his 2nd CD which I became an instant fan so definitely won't change your mind. This is highly recommended as must-have for those who love jazz and are those who really love the sound of Miles Davis, Steely Dan, Simply Red, Donald Fagen, Barry White, Lisa Stansfield, Guru, Alicia Keys, Musiq, and many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh So Sexy, December 14, 2008

I purchased "Bonafide - Jon B." when it came out in 1995 and I totally loved it...still do! This was Jon B.'s debut album and it still holds up well some 13 yrs. later. I've always felt that Jon B. as an R&B artist has stayed true to who he is. He truly deserves to be more appreciated than he is. If your new to Jon B.'s music then a great introduction to it would be "Bonafide". It will really put you in a sexy mood and who wouldn't want to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mostly winning formula, November 1, 2007
This review is from: Bonafide (Audio CD)
A passionate, soulful white R&B singer, Jon B. (for Buck) had a gold album the first time out, and not without good reason. His crooning on sensual slow jams like "Pretty Girl" and "Burning 4 You" is smooth as butter and very reminiscient of Babyface, who reportedly had some writing and/or production credits for this album. These types of songs are what Jon B. does best, but unfortunately he tries to have it both ways here, and the formula does turn a little sour when he tries to get hip-hoppish.

While I do like some of the songs on Jon's follow-up cd's, none have come close to the songs on Bonafide! From beginning to end, it is a wonderful ride. The climax of this cd is the truly underrated "Love Don't Do"....I will just say that for anyone who has ever been in love and gotten hurt, this song will definitely speak wonders to your heart! Jon does a lot of ad-libbing towards the end of some of his slower songs which in my opinion brings out a truly unique soulful sensation that is lacking in music today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jizzable Jazz, April 22, 2000
By
This review is from: Bonafide (Audio CD)
BONAFIDE is a Jazz-like album mixed with dance tunes and ballads. The album starts off with a with "BONAFIDE", a club song. "Simple Melody" is a fun song. I wouldn't call Bootsy Collins' rap verse rap. Jon B. starts getting a lil' freaky in "Love Is Candi". Next is the Jon B. duet "Someone to Love". Which was nominated for 1996 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. "Time After Time" is a uptempo ballad. Don't let your love fall on the next song "Overflow". "Pretty Girl" is a melodic song written by Babyface. Yet, Jon B. is a straight-up freak in "Pants Off". "Burning 4 You" is a slow ballad that calms you down. Jon B. uses his sexy singing voice in "Gone Before Light". "Love Don't Do" is the longest ballad on the album. BONAFIDE should be played in a jazz club. Overall, I love the CD.
