Great music but beware the marketing ploy, December 12, 1999
This review is from: Bonampak (Audio CD)
Strong melodies delivered by pan flutes and traditonal flutes. Many of these tracks also show up on the compilation CDs from Earthtone. Justifiably so, but beware! This CD was reissued in 1999 under new artwork, title ("Ring of Gold"), and sequence of tracks. My rating of 4 means I like the album, still listen to it and recommend a purchase.

And Now For Something A Little Different, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Bonampak (Audio CD)
Bonampak is a delightful collection of songs from the band ah-Kin, which in Mayan means "He of the Sun" or "Sun God," if you stretch it a little. These are instrumentals with very little vocalization, and they are heavy on the wind instruments and percussion and light on other sounds. There are also odd sounds here and there that really add ambience, like the sound of shattering glass in one song and bird calls in others. I really, really liked this album and wish ah-Kin would put out more music. Apparently these musicians got together, put out Bonampak and Ring of Gold and then disbanded and didn't do anything else, why I don't know. The style of music is AmerIndian, from Central America, so it is full of rich sounds from that part of the world. Bonampak is an ancient Mayan Indian city in southern Mexico, famous for its thousand-year-old, colorful murals which survive to this day. The inclusion of animal sounds in the tracks really takes me back to my own explorations of these jungle cities, where wild animals play in the ruins and call out as you climb the ancient pyramids and watch out for rattlesnakes and fer-de-lances as you snap pics to send home. This album is great for closing your eyes and listening to or for looking at pictures of the old Mayan sites as you take in the tracks. Bonampak is a really, really inventive and enjoyable album, and I urge you to give it a try.

Exotic visions, November 17, 2003
This review is from: Bonampak (Audio CD)
It's too bad that there is only 1 review for this CD as it deserves to be heard by all of those who would enjoy closing their eyes and letting their imagination loose through the South American landscape. The better your audio system the more you'll enjoy the beautiful music contained therein. I'm not from S.A. but listening to this CD makes me wish I was. To have such a legacy as painted by the instruments on this CD is to live in another world. Each number is hypnotic as the instruments evoke mental visions of pyramids, exotic costumes, etc. Do yourself a favor and buys this CD. If you're like me you'll play it continuously without getting tired of listening to it. But as reviewer Steven E Blake said, beware as this CD was reissued in 1999 under new artwork and title ("Ring of Gold"). I wrote to EarthTone and complained about their releasing the same CD with added persussion and changing the volume levels of some of the instruments and they were nice enough to send me two free samplers which I have enjoyed tremendously. So, whether you buy Bonampak or Ring of Gold, you'll be enriched.
