5.0 out of 5 stars Good selection of early episodes, August 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Bonanza [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Seven solid episodes from the first year of the TV Western series "Bonanza."

V.1 - BLOOD ON THE LAND: A sheepherder (Everett Sloane) tries cutting through the Ponderosa property looking for a shortcut to California, but decides to acquire the Ponderosa for himself by holding Adam hostage. Ep. 22, 2/13/60

V.2 - THE STRANGER: Ben is running for governor of Nevada when a detective (Lloyd Nolan) tracks him down to face an old, mistaken murder charge in New Orleans. Ep 24, 2/27/60

V.3 - ESCAPE TO THE PONDEROSA: Three escaped prisoners from an Army camp ambush Adam, then try to hide from their pursuers who are led by a renegade prison captain. Joe Maross, Grant Williams, Gloria Talbert. Ep 25, 3/5/60

V.4 - SAN FRANCISCO (aka SAN FRANCISCO HOLIDAY): On a visit to the Barbary Coast, Ben and a couple of hands get shangaied. Hoss, Joe and Hop Sing come to the rescue. (No Adam in this episode.) Robert Nichols, Kathleen Crowley, Richard Deacon. Ep. 28, 4/2/60

V.5 - BITTER WATER: A silver mine speculator tries buying land from a Ponderosa neighbor, and mixes sick cattle with Cartwright stock. Don Dubbins, Merry Anders. Ep 29, 4/9/60

V.6 - FEET OF CLAY: Hoss befriends a homeless boy whose escaped convict father makes his way to the Ponderosa. When the father commits a murder during a robbery, Hoss is forced to kill him, then must face the boy. Logan Field, David Ladd. Ep 30, 4/16/60

V.7 - DEATH AT DAWN: Ben and his sons are sworn in as deputies to help make sure a murderer hangs. When the gang leader captures Ben in an attempt to force them to free the murderer, Adam must try to outthink him in order to save his father's life. Ep 32, 4/30/60

Videos include a brief clip of background information on the series. Quality of the tapes is good (they're recorded in SP), although the color is a bit faded, a problem for all Bonanza videos I've seen. As seems to be usual for commercially produced Bonanza videos, different theme music accompanies the credits.

These are good, solid examples of dramatic episodes from the Bonanza series (with the exception of San Francisco Holiday, which is lighter in tone and has some good comic moments). Although there is a lot of action, the crux of most of these episodes is a dilemma one or more of the Cartwrights have to resolve. For example, the episode "Death at Dawn" pits Adam against Hoss and Joe as they try to save their father's life.

Highly recommended family fare, or if you just want a quality show to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent set, February 15, 2002

This is a very good set to own if you are a Bonanza episode collector. The beginning of each tape has a short narration that really sets up the episode. The video and audio are excellent. Our Bonanza theme song isn't there, but that a very minor thing. I recommend this set to anyone and the price is worth it. Episodes: Blood On The Land, Escape To Ponderosa, The Stranger, San Francisco, Feet of Clay, Death at Dawn, and Bitter Water.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good set!, March 11, 2002

This review is from: Bonanza [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a good quality set. The theme song isn't original but that's okay. The video quality is way better than the Madacy videos. Here's a tip from me: If you want the videos with the original theme song make sure that the publisher/producers of the video come from Republic Picture, the one's that have the copyrights to the original song.

If the theme song issue doesn't bother you, buy this set! You'll enjoy it completely.
