Book Description

March 1, 2011
For many years, Ilsa Redlich has helped her parents run a hotel in South Amana, but as the United States enters the Great War, she can feel her world changing. The residents of the towns surrounding the Amana Colonies used to be accepting of their quiet, peaceful neighbors, but with anti-German sentiment running high, the Amana villages are now plagued by vandalism, threats, and insults. Things get even worse when Ilsa finds out her family won't be allowed to speak German in public--and that Garon, the childhood friend she's long been smitten with, has decided to join the army.

Jutta Schmidt is shocked when several members of the Council of National Defense show up on her family's doorstep. Sure, the Schmidts once lived in the Amana Colonies, but that was years ago. She's even more surprised when the council demands that she travel to Amana and report back on any un-American activities. Not daring to disobey the government agents, Jutta takes a job at the South Amana hotel, befriends the daughter of the owners, and begins to eavesdrop every chance she gets.

When Jutta hears Ilsa making antiwar remarks and observes Garon assisting a suspicious outsider, she is torn at the prospect of betraying her new friends. But what choice does she have? And when Garon is accused of something far worse than Jutta could imagine, can the Amana community come to his aid in time?

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful historical fiction read!, February 14, 2011
This review is from: A Bond Never Broken (Daughters of Amana, Book 3) (Paperback)
This was a really good book to read. I have enjoyed each of the books in the Daughters of Amana Series, and this one was probably my favorite. I live in Iowa, work near Marengo ( one of the towns in the book), am of German decent, and have visited the Amana Colonies many times. I have learned so much local history through these books. This one, "A Bond Never Broken" brought out the idea of how Germans, even American born Germans, were treated when the Great war began. It is eye opening, and very thought provoking. Reading the book, I felt as though I entered into the lifestyle shared at the Amana Colonies, and though I wanted to see how the conflicts would resolve, I didn't want the story of these people to end. This book is Historical Fiction at its best!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, June 9, 2011

This review is from: A Bond Never Broken (Daughters of Amana, Book 3) (Paperback)
Normally, I enjoy Judith Miller's books, but A Bond Never Broken really disappointed me. I've started reading it several times but can't get into it. It might get better later in the book, but I'll never know because I'll can't get that far. Sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for A Bond Never Broken, May 4, 2011
This review is from: A Bond Never Broken (Daughters of Amana, Book 3) (Paperback)
Sometimes the choices we make don't feel like choices at all. Such is the case with Ilsa Redlich as she seeks to help her family by doing something that goes against her nature, and possibly against what God would want.

I enjoyed this story very much. Although it's the 3rd book in a series, it is the first one I have read. Ms. Miller does a great job in weaving the previous plots in to the extent that I was never lost or left wondering if I had missed something.

The highlight of this book for me was the struggles Ilsa faced and the ways she handled them, and grew through them. While this is set in a historical setting and in a Amana community, it's still something that I, as a reader could relate to.
