Editorial Reviews

Review

“Peppered with fun facts and cheeky asides, actor Roger Moore’s book looking back on the golden anniversary of James Bond on-screen is a treat for 007 fans. . . . No other Bond has managed to make 007 quite as charming and endearing as Moore. He brings those traits to Bond on Bond, inviting us to sit back and enjoy the ride.” – Associated Press

“The cars, the cocktails, the girls, the gadets, and, oh, the villains. Roger Moore’s Bond on Bond is a gossipy scrapbook of the British secret agent’s adventures on and off the big screen. Moore, who starred in seven Bond movies, is as debonair on the page as he is on screen, and the 400 photographs make for a first-rate bit of time travel.”—Boston Globe

From the Inside Flap

The Bond movies remain the longest continually running film series in movie history, and  2012 marks its fiftieth anniversary. To celebrate these films and their cultural heritage, Roger Moore has written a book that features all the Bond movies, along with a wonderfully witty account of his own involvement in them. From the girls to the villains, the cocktails to the cars, and gadgets to the locations and everything else, this beautiful book is illustrated with hundreds of iconic images from all the films plus many previously unseen photos from Moore’s personal collection. This is the ultimate James Bond book, written by the ultimate insider, with all the affection and good humor we’ve come to expect from Roger Moore.

"Bond on Bond" provides an informative overview of the 007 filmography - but what makes the book stand out is the fact it is written through the witty and self-effacing lens of Bond No.3, Sir Roger Moore. The book is split into sections (Women, Gadgets, Style, Vehicles, Locations, etc.) and is gorgeously illustrated. Sure, it's a cliché to say it, but this book actually does make a great coffee table book. Glossy, fun, and informative.

There were many photos I was unfamiliar with, but as I'm not a completist on such matters, I'm not certain if some are "never before seen". It was a pleasure to see references and images to the unofficial "Never Say Never Again" threaded throughout. After all, along with 1967's spoof, "Casino Royale"," Never" has an important place in the Bond lexicon. It was also interesting to read Moore's views on the controversial casting of Daniel Craig.

Moore played Bond with a twinkle in his eye, but he was also effectively dramatic, where necessary. These qualities reflect the tone of this book. There are many amusing anecdotes (and some straight-faced one's as well) - and you can just about hear Moore's voice as you read them.

Last but not least, Moore provides witty captions to a large majority of the photographs. These captions were an unexpected pleasure of the book for me. The caption that accompanies a beefcake image of Daniel Craig is particularly droll.

This is the third book by Roger Moore that I've read. As with his James Bond Diary for Live & Let Die and his autobiography he's a great storyteller. Amusing, thoughtful and never mean spirited although I'd love to hear him dish about Grace Jones. His take on all of the actors who have played Bond is thoughtful and it's fun and surprising when he dishes on himself and when even he thought he was too old to play Bond (see the one off cartoons that take potshots at him for being an AARP Bond). The book is great fun and there is very litle repetition of stories from the earlier books. If you're a Bond or Roger Moore fan get this book.

Why do people always have something NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUT EVERYTHING! I just get sick of this world so often. This book was entertaining, well put together, and an ABSOLUTE JOY for any James Bond fan obsessed or not. YOU KNOW HE IS 85 years young and deserves some respect. He has a right to his opinion. I was taught to respect my elders.

Great treasure of information, pictures and personal memories from Sir Roger. He is always fun and entertaining, and in this book he mixes it all together. It's a book no Bond fan would want to miss. Long live Bond, and long live Sir Roger!

When you have been a fan of the James Bond movies as long as I have been, you really appreciate a book like this. Roger Moore is a true gentleman and I appreciate the behind the scenes view that he gives to the reader. As part of my career, I have worked as a movie still photographer for a number of years and yet I feel this book is a wonderful bouquet of flowers to the many fans of the 007 movies. I am happy that Mr. Moore did this book particularly in light of the fact that The new James Bond, Daniel Craig, has added a new vision of 007 that is interesting along with what is now an interesting history of the franchise.

At 48, I have to admit, while I think Connery is the best Bond, Moore is the one I grew up with. To that end, he was no slouch as Bond and, somehow, is the most approachable (whatever that means). For that reason, he's a perfect choice to have done his own book on the various Bond movies. In fact, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy are 3 of my top 5 or 6 Bond movies, with Connery's being the other ones. Personally, I think the classic Bond era ended in the 80's, as any incarnation after that (Brosnan and Craig) are so ladden with unfathomable effects and explosions that the actors are incidental. And Connery and Moore, really, each had a certain charisma for the role. I'm not exactly a Bond fanatic, by any means. But, I enjoy the movies. When I learned of this book, by Roger Moore himself, I knew I had to have it, and was not disappointed. It's a very enjoyable romp through the 007 movies, complete with Roger Moore's wit. The only thing I would nit pick is that Moore admits he's never seen Never Say Never Again. Given that I lived through the "Battle of the Bonds" in the early 80's, when both Connery's and Moore's movies came out, I'd love to know Moore's thoughts on the Connery film (I loved it). Nevertheless, this a really great book. I used to own a Bond movie encyclopedia of sorts, but gave it away. This is my only Bond book, and it's not that I'll never buy another one, but this one...by this author, more than suffices.

There's too much detail here for it to have been entirely written by Moore (and that's acknowledged in the credits) but it certainly has his voice and contains the same type of humor and background information about the Bond series that his DVD commentaries have. For Bond fans, the photos of props and behind-the-scenes action are worth it alone.

If you are a Bond fan, you must get this book. Roger Moore is a fantastic writer, very clever, much like the Bond he was ( is!). A must have for your library. The photo's are gorgeous, the behind the scenes details even better. Loved it.
