Book Description

April 1, 2009
A nineteenth-century Cornish romance - Circumstances have forced once-respectable Roz Trevaskis to turn to smuggling. When she is called on to nurse local Justice Branoc Casvellans brother, Roz sees a chance to improve her lot, not anticipating the effects of such close contact with her handsome employer. But how will Branoc and his family react when the truth about Rozs past, and her involvement with the local smuggling trade, comes out?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Roz Trevaskis is trapped in an untenable situation: her newly rediscovered mother is a drunken whore, her young half brother needs more than she can provide through her job at a local pub, and a smuggler wants to bed her in payment of her mother’s debts. When Davy Casvellan, younger brother to the local magistrate, contracts smallpox and Roz delivers him to his home, Branoc sees his chance to further his acquaintance with the intriguing young beauty while he avails himself of her nursing services on Davy’s behalf. Jackson’s newest historical romance offers a detailed account of everyday life for the impoverished folk of Cornwall in the early 1800s, along with insights into the corruption rampant among many of the upper class charged with administering the law and keeping the peace. --Lynne Welch

2.0 out of 5 stars Bonded Heart, June 28, 2009
This review is from: Bonded Heart (Hardcover)
Bonded Heart is a romance novel set in nineteenth century Cornwall, England. It is the story of Roz Trevaskis the illegitimate daughter of an alcoholic mother. Roz was left in the care of her grandparents, abandoned by her mother. Twenty-one years later, she leaves her respectable life in search and rescue of her mother who abandoned her when she was an infant. She meets her hero, Branoc Casvellan the justice of the town she now resides in because she must go before him and pay fines for her mother's drunken and disorderly conduct. To sum up plot--poor undesirable heroine meets wealthy, handsome, respectable hero--from two different worlds--can never come together, blah, blah, blah.

At first I found this story to be compelling and well written, and i just kept waiting and hoping for something to happen to pull the story together, but instead the plot unraveled into a trite, too consise nothingness that left me feeling a great disappointment. The ending was too rushed--all the conflicts were fixed too easily and so abruptly--i found the ending to be quite ridiculous. It really seemed like Ms. Jackson got tired of writing and just had to end the story all of a sudden. I kept waiting for the romance to build to something wonderful but the last quarter of the book fell totally flat to a big nothing finish. I felt cheated and disappointed since the book had great potential in the beginning.

If you are looking for intense or explicit love scenes--there are NONE in this book. For a romance novel this was defintely rate G. But that's not what made it a disappointment--in fact I found the lack of graphic sex scenes was refreshing. However, the last few chapters of the book just left me feeling empty and sorry that I had bothered to finish the story.
