True to its title,
This review is from: Bonding While Learning: Activities to Grow Your Relationship While Preparing for Reading Success (Paperback)
I love this book's activities because they're not only helping me foster a love of reading in my child and helping him learn to begin reading and writing, but also because the activities really are (per the title) bonding activities. One activity in the book, called "What Should We Talk About?", even has me telling my son stories about my own childhood that I wouldn't have shared with him without the book's wonderful prompts. These special moments have been precious. I have a ton of worksheet books at home, and they just don't compare to the learning and sharing this book facilitates. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Amazing Resource for Two Years and Counting!,
This review is from: Bonding While Learning: Activities to Grow Your Relationship While Preparing for Reading Success (Paperback)
My son and I have loved using the resources in this book together for more than two years -- at home, at the park, and even while sitting in traffic. The authors do a great job of helping kids develop a love of reading without making the learning process feel rote, boring or tiresome (for myself or my son). I LOVE that the book offers the precise details parents need to successfully practice the activities with their kids. I also appreciate the ideas the authors provide for adapting the activities to whatever situation they find themselves in -- at a restaurant, at home, etc. The fact that the book comes with the materials one needs for the activities is another a plus. And, unlike other books I've found, the materials aren't flash cards or worksheets. They're actually engaging and fun to use!

As a former teacher and now a mom of 2 young children, I highly recommend this book to parents, grandparents and care providers who want to help their children get a running start on reading. This book is NOT a "drill and kill" get-your-child-reading-by-age-4-in-100-easy-lessons-or-else manual. It's all about how to deliberately expose your child to good literacy principles in a fun, engaging, natural way. The book even includes reproducible printouts of materials so you don't have to hunt them down yourself (who has time for that?)! I also plan to order this book as a gift for my sisters and friends of little ones.
