How It Works

Bondo Auto Body Filler consists of two compounds: a resin based filler and a hardening agent. A tube of the hardening agent is included with the container of Bondo Auto Body Filler. The consistency of both compounds is creamy, but as the hardening agent is blended together with the filler it acts as a catalyst, creating a chemical reaction which thickens the new mixture into a paste. Bondo Auto Body Filler products include directions containing simple mix ratios that make for convenient measuring out of both compounds without any waste.

The compounds should be blended away from the area to be repaired on a handheld mixing palette or other maneuverable flat surface using a flat edged spreading tool (palette, spreading tool and recommended eye protection, mask and solvent resistant gloves sold separately). The result is a rapidly thickening adhesive mixture that can be spread on and will stick to correctly prepared surfaces and spaces. The mixture cures quickly, shapes in minutes and will accept as many reasonably applied applications as required to fill holes and deep scratches or dents. It is is formulated to be a non-shrinking and permanently durable material. Once completely hardened Bondo Auto Body Filler can be sanded using various grits to achieve as smooth a finish as required. The filled, area as well as the area immediately surrounding it should be covered with Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty (sold separately). Feather sanding this creates a consistent sloping surface that can then be painted with standard gray auto primer and an outer coat and clear coat finish. In addition to its uses in repairs of typical vehicle surfaces Bondo Auto Body Filler is also suitable for repairs of other surfaces including wood, steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and concrete.

Instructions*

  1. Clean the vehicle with soap and water, followed by a solvent cleaner. Adhesive Remover from 3M is a great product for this step. This is important as any contaminants (wax, bug residue, tar, dirt) remaining when sanding begins are ground into the surface as they could compromise the adhesion of repair materials.
  2. When repairing any dent it is best to remove as much of the dent as possible prior to filling with body filler. An assortment of slide hammers, hammers, dollies and picks may be needed to perform this step. Always use appropriate eye and respiratory protection.
  3. After the dent is roughly removed it is time to start sanding. Use a sanding block or random orbital sander with 80 grit abrasive to remove all paint to approximately 2" around the dent.
  4. Using proper techniques mix Bondo Body Filler from 3M and apply to the dent in thin layers. The first layer should be applied with firm pressure to ensure good adhesion. Avoid over-application of filler as this just requires additional sanding. Let dry for 15 to 20 minutes, dependent on temperature and humidity.
  5. Select a sanding block that is appropriate for the size of the repair and attach a 80 grit abrasive sheet. Rough shape/sand the repair area. Always keep your block flat to the surface. Avoid over-sanding with 80 grit or the finished repair area will be low. If low spots are detected, it may be necessary to apply more body filler and repeat this sanding step.
  6. Once satisfied with the rough shape of the repair, attach an 180 grit abrasive sheet to the sanding block and final shape the repair. After this step, the repair should be level and there should be no 80 grit scratches remaining. The body filler should also have a smooth featheredge all around the repair.
  7. Attach a 180 grit abrasive to the sanding block to featheredge the paint away from the body filler and remove all straight line scratches.
  8. Mix Bondo Professional Glazing and Spot Putty from 3M and apply to the entire repair area overlapping the body filler and paint featheredge. Allow 15 minutes to dry, depending on the temperature and humidity.
  9. Apply a 180 grit abrasive to the sanding block and sand the repair area until level. Remember to keep the block flat to the surface at all times and do not over sand.
  10. Apply a 320 abrasive grit to your sanding block and remove all straight line scratches from the paint around the filler area. Once complete the repair is ready for the application of primer surfacer and topcoats. It's very important to follow the paint manufacturer's instructions for your specific brand of primer or paint.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Bondo... January 3, 2011
Size Name:1 Pound 12 Ounce|Verified Purchase
I've never used Bondo on a car but I've used a lot of Bondo. It's duct tape like product. Being able to order it online and have it delivered to my door for less than the cost of local purchase is great. The only downside is that a few of my cans were dented so they didn't stack perfectly.

I can't imagine anyone browsed to Bondo but if by chance you did make a mental note that this product could be a solution to your future problem. It's a bit messy but very simple to work with. If you've never used Bondo think of it as a two part epoxy that works to fill volume instead of sticking things together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well but single use only September 3, 2012

This stuff is classic bondo. Works great on all kinds of things, from automotive body work to fixing broken statues to patching wood.

But make no mistake, this package is one use. It not just that it is so small an amount, but that the hardener comes in something like a ketchup packet. Once you open it, it would be difficult to save any extra for later.

Purchased for Halo armor build. Card stock hardened with resin and layered with this bondo. So far so good. Sanding is very easy with this using 80 grit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works really well! July 25, 2013
Size Name:1 Gallon (128 Ounces)|Verified Purchase
This bondo has been great on my sailboat. It fills nicely without many little "bubble" holes, and it sands easily. Don't forget you only have about 5 minutes to spread it out before it gets too hard to spread.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many Uses Other Than Fixing Fenders January 15, 2013
By Squirt
Size Name:1 Pound 12 Ounce|Verified Purchase
I have an all tile floor except for my bedroom, which is carpeted. The tiles had several holes in them in the kitchen and living room. It almost looked like the previous tenants went around purposely smashing the tiles with a heavy object. I already knew about Bondo and it occurred to me that I could fix the holes with it. It worked perfectly, however Bondo dries a bright orange, so I assessed the most dominant colors in the tile and went to my local hardware store and bought perfectly matching colors of permanent paint. After the paint dried, it was impossible to tell the difference between the ones I fixed and the ones that were not damaged. My landlord was so amazed that she told the property owners and they hired me to fix broken tiles in other units. I've used my steam mop several times, and the tiles still retain the same look they had when they were first fixed more than 2 years ago.

I bought this from advance and i am very disappointed with the mixing concept either you have too much hardener or not enough and is a pain in the butt i mixed some today and before i could walk all the way around the vehicle it hardened tried it again and this time wouldn't harden and i used a little less hardener such a pain!!! I like 3M its a good product!!!

I'm re-doing a 1975 coachman camper with some water damaged areas that goes a bit into wood structure and a soft spot in the metal around fold out stairs. I was looking for something to help with mild wood rot in the bones of camper around door and saw a diy video using Bondo to mix, fill and shape around wood that was still half sturdy. So, this product can serve to fix my various issues. However, I was at Walmart this past weekend and walked right by Bondo! It was the same price. So I thought. (NOT REALLY) I received it today. Opened the package...and saw the container is HALF THE SIZE of the one I saw in the store. -_- I mean, it's not very big at all. I'll have to go buy the bigger one just to finish the job. So, of course I can't give more than 3 stars when I know that I could've gotten the exact product with DOUBLE the amount, at the same price a mile down the road. Live and learn. Shop around! This is a nice "SAMPLE" of the product though. If that's all ya want.

This is a product that is well known and dependable. I am definitely a amateur but with a little research have had good results. I fix up beaten up tool boxes for fun. (not a lot of work and good results.) A excellent useful product.
