2.0 out of 5 stars Buy only if you are aware of basic dog health foods!, September 7, 2000

Though likely well intentioned - the recipes for this book are not well researched. The author suggests that onions be used - in many recipes - but, according to my vet, onions can be deadly to dogs!! Other than onions - there are many recipes that suggest loads of cheese... there are great recipes to modify - but, unless you are acutely aware of dog health issues and needs, this book may not be as helpful as you would like.

5.0 out of 5 stars why I like this book, June 17, 2005

I suppose I could cook for my dogs on a regular basis, but I don't. This book has been extremely valuable to me, though, when I have a dog who has been very sick or through surgery and is refusing the regular fare. In such case I can always find a recipe here to tempt the appetite and bring them back from the edge. I credit the toasted sardine and cheese sandwich for saving Mac (gangrenous spot on the liver in 1991); and right now Kerby (cancer diagnosis and amputee) is willing to eat the gizzard and egg pie (I have several others marked, like potato and bacon stuffed hotdogs). The recipes are simple and economical, and include gravies, soups, and breakfasts, as well as special needs diets. The earlier review about onions is well noted, but I'm not sure that was anything people knew about when this book first came out. I would think the other review is bogus.
For those who may be at a loss at how to deal with post-surgical or disease related anorexia, I highly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Dogs, December 6, 2010
This review is from: Bone Appetit!: Gourmet Cooking for Your Dog (Paperback)
I thought the first part of the book was great. She talked about history of dogs, how to care for them, and nutrition. I scanned through the recipes and noticed that there was not any nutritional information. Also, most of the recipes were more for humans not dogs. And the onions!

I tried the first recipe for the teeth cleaning biscuits. WOW the dogs loved them. BUT she forgot to tell you what the do with the parsley. I mixed it with the flour the first time. That was ok, but mixed it with the liquids the second and found that much easier to work with. My suggestion is if the dog is big, make the biscuits bigger. We gave one to a black lab and he did a chomp chomp swallow. Didn't help his teeth!

I am going to try some of the other recipes that are obviously just for dogs. Then maybe some of the others that look more human orientated.
