5.0 out of 5 stars Great comic horror, August 22, 2009
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
Cold Blooded Chillers: Tales of Suburban Murder and Malice by R.M. Heske is an anthology of three previously released comic books. The ten comic book stories presented are sectioned off into subcategories: Femme Fatales, Mistrust Thy Neighbor, Someone is Watching, and Extra Pieces. Some of the stories, such as False Pretenses, are quick and to the point, while others like Alibi offer very little graphics and tell the story as if it were a script. Within you have everything from women murders, rape, child abuse, false accusations, to serial killers.

The art styles vary because the artists themselves do, but the stories are all written by R.M. Heske, who has a knack for the creepy and the bizarre, as well as for revealing the darkness inside of people. Heske's characters are common people, housewives and next door neighbors, so some of the chill comes from the fact that they could be living next door to you. The mystery and suspense in some stories is palpable, and some have twists at the end that take you by surprise and thoroughly disturb and amuse you. Some of the stories will definitely make you feel ill at ease because they deal with subjects that people might consider taboo, but I would hope as fans of horror, readers would not worry so much about what is taboo and instead enjoy the feeling of being unsettled. As for the art, I was very impressed with it because the panels are executed beautifully and go perfectly with the story told.

I had a great time lying in bed reading this anthology. By their very nature, the stories are all quick reads compiled together into a book you can get through in an hour. I love instant gratification. Each one is like an episode, as vivid as if you were watching it on television. I recommend this comic to anyone who likes the horror genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone Chiller is the book for you, June 24, 2009
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
A suspenseful, disturbing, nail-biting book that I couldn't put down. In this anthology about "suburban tales of murder and malice," Heske writes about the people next door in a way that is truly unique and frightening. And the artwork is like a box of dark chocolates - each one is different and distinct ... you never know what's you're going to get until you bite into it! If you like horror that cuts to the bone, BONE CHILLER is the book for you. And, at only $12, its very affordably priced compared to other graphic novels. Buy this book - then hide under the covers and pray that you're alone!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cold blooded thriller..., March 11, 2010
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
Bone Chiller

By R. M. Heske

Publisher: Heske Horror

Published: 2009

ISBN: 978-1427635259

Pages: 140

This book is like nothing I have ever read before. It is a graphic novel collection of short stories that grabbed my attention from the very first page. It was suspenseful with twists and turns making it impossible for me to stop reading it once I started it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thriller which gave me a glimpse into the minds of dark individuals who could very well be a neighbor or co-worker. The stories are quick reads with various topics-- child abuse, rape, murder and serial killers--and are easy to read. It took me less than an hour to fully ingest the stories he composed. Some of the subjects are difficult to digest and may make some readers uncomfortable or frightened. The stories and characters are so very real. Each story can stand alone but they blend very well together. I am not used to reading books written in this form so I must admit I did have to reread some parts of the stories. However, that is a reflection on me not on Mr. Heske's storytelling ability.

The art work is simply amazing and coupled with Mr. Heske's storytelling ability, makes for an incredible read. If you are a fan of horror books, this is the book for you. After reading this book, I look forward to reading another one.

5.0 out of 5 stars CHILLED MY BONES!!, July 7, 2009
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
I didn't quite know what I was getting into when I ordered R.M. Heske's BONE CHILLER, but I'm glad I took the plunge. Mr. Heske is a master story teller who unmasks the dark side of humanity. Some tales are disturbing and others darkly comical. After reading this book, I find myself peeking out the curtains and wondering what depraved deeds my neighbors are capable of. A great read for horror fans looking for something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who said horror comics were dead?, June 4, 2009
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
Forgive the obviousness, but BONE CHILLER warmed my heart. Horror comics seems to be in a resurgence, but this time, a good half of that goodwill is fostered by the independents. And not just independent publishers, but real DIY independents as well. One of them is Robert Heske, whose homemade Heske Horror brand is behind the new anthology series COLD BLOODED CHILLERS. This book collects eight stories from the first three issues, plus two new extras, all written by Heske, but drawn by a different artist. The writing is well-paced as the action moves from panel to panel. There will be blood. This book isn't, say, the second coming of EC or anything, but is effective entertainment for quick-dose reads, and an independent effort worthy of support.

4.0 out of 5 stars CREEPED UP ON ME!!!, September 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
This collection of 8 graphic tales about suburban murder and malice was edgy and unnerving. Not for the faint of heart, but quite entertaining if you like dark, psychological horror where "Man is the worst monster of all".

5.0 out of 5 stars Neighbors, April 7, 2011
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
You may want laxer gun control laws after taking a twisted peek into what your neighbors may be, or likely are, up to

in Robert Heske's hauntingly scribed Graphic Novelettes. I suggest you run, not walk, to your

keyboard and order this...unless you have a heart condition.....in that case I'd get a

Doctor's Approval before reading....or You may end up Getting An Undertaker's

Approval.....Behold the Shock and Awesomeness

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisted and wrong. . . but oh, so right!, April 25, 2010
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
Excellent example of a disturbing but riveting graphic novel. Great art and fantastic stories that progress at just the right pace and leave you wanting to turn one more page, and then another, and then another. I could not go to bed because I had to keep reading! Bone Chiller does just that. Beware though, not for the faint of heart! Which is perfect for me! Great job, keep these books coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic horror comics with a modern slant, December 6, 2009
By
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
This is a graphic novel-format collection of short stories, written and produced by R. M. Heske, under his Heske Horror imprint. I think the proper title of the collection might be a little confusing -- the striking cover (this is a VERY slick, professional-looking production) has BONE CHILLER in the lower right corner, but more prominently across the top: COLD BLOODED CHILLERS. Anyway, what matters is what's inside, and I enjoyed that a great deal. As a kid I worshipped comic books (some of my favorites being MAGNUS, ROBOT FIGHTER and the old TUROK comics -- and in a horror vein, CREEPY, EERIE and VAMPIRELLA), but as an adult I fell away from them with the exception of HEAVY METAL in the late 70's, early 80's. (I was underwhelmed by a HEAVY METAL I bought about a year ago while waiting for a train -- the art didn't seem to compare to what I remembered.) Though no huge fan of Japanese manga, in recent years I've greatly enjoyed a few books such as Hideshi Hino's harrowing PANORAMA OF HELL, Senno Knife's creepy MANTIS WOMAN, and the amazing cyberpunk series BLAME!. Then there's WATCHMEN, which is now one of my favorite books, graphic novel or otherwise. So I've largely been away for a while, but once I got started on BONE CHILLER it was like coming home again, to those good old days of EERIE and CREEPY, particularly. One's first instinct would of course be to make comparisons with the old EC comics, such as TALES FROM THE CRYPT, but these stories have a more modern slant -- the horror stressing the psychological over the supernatural. Heske's ultra-dark plotlines deal with paranoia and guilt, contemporary anxieties like sending your child to daycare, dating a person you meet online, child abuse and so on. There's sexual content and cussin', too, so it's definitely for mature readers (or immature old readers like me). The artwork varies in effectiveness, naturally, with standout work from Reno Maniquis, Monty Borror, and "Zeu." My favorite story is probably SYNCHRONICITY, because while a number of the stories have the classic approach of mini morality/revenge tales with twist endings, this was a very enigmatic piece about strange guardian angels, armageddon, and second chances. It'll make you scratch your head, and that's just what I like about it. Another great story, TRANSCENDENCE, conveys a strong sense of loss and loneliness. Much of this kind of atmosphere depends on the skills of the artist, and here Reno Maniquis (and in the opening story, HER FIRST DAY ALONE, Monty Borror) creates a haunting emotional atmosphere that quite fulfills the writer's intentions. (Not to mention, Maniquis accurately captures the look of the New England Aquarium, which I'm sure inspired the New England based Heske!) So, I heartily recommend that others like me who enjoyed the bone chillers of the past delve between the covers of BONE CHILLER, and experience those dark thrills and chills again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone Chiller - Enjoyed every juicy bite!, June 23, 2009
This review is from: Bone Chiller (Paperback)
This is not your typical comic book. These stories are reminiscent of "Tales from the Crypt", except they are darker and more chilling!

The art work and story lines flowed well together and kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning pages. I enjoyed every juicy bite!
