Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Wiltse's fifth thriller to feature FBI agent John Becker (Into the Fire, etc.) effectively paints nearly every main character as the elusive serial killer preying on young women in the commuter hamlet of Camden, Conn. The rain-swollen Saugatuck River floats a bone into a local backyard, prompting the attention of the vacationing Becker and his old friend "Tee" Terhune, the town's police chief; Becker's assessment that the bone is human is confirmed by nerdy local orthopedist Stanley Korn. After marks on the bone reveal that the body it belongs to was cut in pieces before burial, an upriver search turns up a charnel house of companion bones in the loose soil of a Christmas tree farm. A prime suspect arises when Tee gets anonymous tips that one of his officers, the loathsome McNeil, who likes to sleep with high-school girls, is involved in the killings. Meanwhile, Becker's wife, Karen, an FBI honcho who's also his boss, pushes Becker and herself into a friendship with Korn and his wife. Signs of an affair between Korn and Karen unnerve Becker enough to hire private detectives to follow the orthopedist; distracted by this threat to his marriage, Becker makes little headway on the case while Tee obsesses about McNeil until a chance happening forces a frightening confrontation that nearly costs Karen her life. Becker's marital tensions cry "plot device," but, as usual, Wiltse manages to weave the psychological foibles of cops and criminals expertly, adding depth to a story that, even on the surface, is a nail-biter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone Deep, November 13, 2001
This review is from: Bone Deep (Hardcover)
Having just read Heartland, his latest, I have gone on a Wiltse reading binge, and boy, what a treat. I read Bone Deep in one sitting and wanted much more. I love the way this guy's mind works, funny, devious, dark and serious, and rocket fast. Why are these books out of print?! And where has this author been, why hasn't anyone told me about him until now?

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone Chilling, July 14, 1998
What an intriging story line. My first David Wiltse book and can't wait to pick up the other John Becker's books. John Becker is an very dark and yet simple man. He can identify with a serial killer and yet still be able to go home for dinner with the wife/boss. Also keeping you on your toes was McNeil who I think everyone has met one time or another. An excellent summer book and hopefully movie

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Nail-Biter!, November 5, 2001
Its been a long time since I read this book but there weren't many reviews on it and I really want people to know what a fantastic read this was. Really, all David Wiltse's books have been page turning ,up till midnight kind of novels! The main character,John Becker, is very fasinating and the alternate characters give witty and fun dialouge...Its a must read!!!
