5.0 out of 5 stars Bone Magic Casts its Spell on Me, January 7, 2010
This review is from: Bone Magic (Sisters of the Moon, Book 7) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've been a fan of Yasmine Galenorn's works for a long time, so I had high expectations for Bone Magic. The series works its way through sets of trilogies; each book is from the POV of each of the three D'Artigo Sisters - Camille (a witch), Delilah (a werecat) and Menolly (a vampire.) Camille's books fall on the "firsts", as her book was the first in the series, Witchling; and Dragon Wytch was the fourth book. Now, with Bone Magic, Galenorn returns to Camille's POV. Camille is a larger than life, lusty, exciting character, who is half Fey, half Human, and all attitude and magic. This book had a lot to "live up to", when combined with the tensions that have been ramping up as the story has built over the last couple books. Simply put, the book delivers on its promise. There is a lot of action; some story lines that have been pending for a while now, finally resolve and characters return, while opening up some truly intriguing avenues Galenorn will be exploring in the next few books.
The characters feel real, in spite of the fantastical setting and backgrounds of many of the magical characters. The humans hold their own, as well.
Galenorn treats relationships as an adult would and should. The people are living on the edge of a precipice, with the fate of worlds in the balance, so everything is more electric, including their encounters in the bedroom. Readers who don't enjoy realistic, sensual character interaction should consider this, before plunging into the world. I would say, though, that if you're not sure, try Witchling; the story and characters will captivate you. These are not "sex books" set in a paranormal world. These are well written, urban fantasies, that address all the areas "real people" live within - emotionally and physically.
I would caution the reader who has not read the first 6 books, to go back, pick up Witchling, and read the series in order. The world is detailed; the plots are thick; and you'll enjoy all of it much more if you're intimately familiar with al the players and plotlines. For those who are up to date on the Otherworld Series, just know that the Trillian question is addressed (finally!); we learn more about Smoky's Dragon background and his family; Iris' history starts to come into play; and Camille gets something she's wished for, but she may regret it. This book really does run by the "be careful what you wish for" advisory. This creates some truly spectacular run ins, and opens up some very interesting cans of worms that all of them will have to deal with in the next few books.

This series has some great characters within it and the previous books have all been decent. I found that this series was better when Trillian was MIA; however, I do like Trillian's character. I suppose the resulting lack of tension when he returned was a little anticlimactic. Since Trillian is supposed to be her Alpha lover, I would have expected his reaction to have been somewhat more dramatic thereby increasing the turmoil and making this a much more exciting read. I liked learning more about some of the characters in this book, particularly Smoky, but I also found myself getting annoyed with some of the main characters...mainly Delilah and Chase.

3.0 out of 5 stars eh, I'm done, January 16, 2010

I really enjoyed the earlier books. But, it's getting too much like Anita Hill character where sex overshadows the storyline. Not my cup of tea.

The author is of course entitled to write as they desire or feel they are lead. I'll do the same with my purchasing dollars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only 1/2 a story, March 12, 2010

This review is from: Bone Magic (Sisters of the Moon, Book 7) (Mass Market Paperback)
Let me start out by saying I love this series, but I was very disappointed with this one. 2 glaring issues...

1. It is only 1/2 a story. Nothing much at all happens and the whole purpose of the book was the confrontation with the new baddy in town and it never happened. We had a 2 page skirmish with her underlings, but that was it. I am just not getting the great reviews for this one. Maybe it is just series loyalty???

2. My last issue is that this writer is heading down the Laurell K Hamilton path that has really hurt her books. This book has very gratuitous sex scenes. I am talking foursomes here! In fact most of the book is Camille having sex and getting all jealous of one of her entourage have an arranged fiance. Can we say "Double Standards"? I am sorry, I just think if she expects her 3 men to accept the foursome without issues, then she needs to be a lot more open minded. I really think this writer is going too far over the top with the sex. I had my teen granddaughter reading this series, but stopped her at the 3rd book, as the sex just got more and more graphic.

I would have appreciated Ms. Galenorn taking out about 1/2 the sex and finishing the plot line this book was all about!

5.0 out of 5 stars bone magic, January 9, 2010
This review is from: Bone Magic (Sisters of the Moon, Book 7) (Mass Market Paperback)
"Bone Magic" is the 7th installment into the Otherworld series, &, once again, Yasmine Galenorn has proven that she deserves a place in the urban fantasy genre. I would definitely read the first 6 books in this series before venturing into "Bone Magic" because the world building is complex, & the books are not completely self contained. Each book is narrated by one of the 3 D'Artigo sisters, & "Bone Magic" is Camille's turn. She & her sisters are still on the lookout for the remaining spirit seals, but Camille must also travel back to Otherworld to get Trillian. While visiting her home, she is summoned by the Black Beast, Father of the Dahns Unicorns, & takes on a new role in the war against Shadow Wing. Iris also travels to Otherworld, & we learn some interesting things about her past. Smoky's past is also brought to light, & the world of the dragons becomes very important.

With each book on the Otherworld series, Galenorn gets better & better. "Bone Magic" was a treat, & I can't wait for the next installment, "Harvest Hunting." The world building always blows me away in this series, & the Otherworld books have become a favorite for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, October 8, 2010

This review is from: Bone Magic (Sisters of the Moon, Book 7) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been reading this series since the beginning, and was really happy to find the newest edition. (I've been busy and did not realize that it had been released a few months ago) I have to say I was very disappointed. There was definitely a "hurry up and wait" feel for this book. There are a lot of story lines that were started, but none were really finished or really advanced. Until now, each book, though it has been part of the current "trilogy" has at least had some type of closure, this one did not. I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that this was ½ a book.

I beginning to fear that this series really is going the way of LKH's Anita Blake's series I am in no way a prude, but I have to say I enjoy myth, magic and a creatively woven story line a great deal more than an unnecessary supernatural sex scene. By the foursome, it felt canned, contrived and definitely predicable. The bathing scene also seemed a great deal out of place. I sincerely hope that the next two books in this section of the series pick up the pace and help continue the creative tale that was started in Witchling.

5.0 out of 5 stars super fantasy, January 8, 2010
This review is from: Bone Magic (Sisters of the Moon, Book 7) (Mass Market Paperback)
Otherworld Intelligence Operator Camille D'Artigo is spirit-bonded and married to Smokey the dragon Smokey and Mario the demon fox. She loves both males, but also misses her beloved soul mate Svartan Trillian. Meanwhile the dragon clan demand Smoky chooses them over his human or face consequences. At the same time Camille wonders how Trillian will react to her matings; she and her sisters struggle to locate a new demon general destroying everything.

When her siblings continue the search, the Moon Mother and Black Beast order Camille to come to Otherworld. She is ecstatic as she assumes she will see Trillian. However, as the Equinox arrives, she has a much more complicated scenario awaiting her. The war has gotten hotter and Camille is caught in a ritual that means life and death, but not just for her.

Camille is front and center as her convoluted life gets even more knotted in her latest escapades this time in Otherworld as evil seems one bloody step ahead of her and her siblings. Although it helps to read the previous tales in this super fantasy (see Demon Mistress and Night Huntress, etc.) to better comprehend how far and complex the lives of the D'Artigo sisters have come, Bone Magic is a fabulous entry as master mage Yasmine Galenorn keeps making life increasingly demanding for the three siblings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wow, December 1, 2010

I really enjoyed the first few books of this series. However, "Bone Magic" will be my last. I will not be reading any further because of the extended, detailed, and unnecessary sex scenes. It makes me sad, because I really liked the characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Stand Alone, August 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bone Magic (Sisters of the Moon, Book 7) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is so jammed packed with mythology and magic terminology. It is a lot to take in. I hadn't read the previous 6 novels, so this was like scrambling to catch up to who's who and what's what. The first time I read it I was really frustrated trying to understand the events that lead the sisters to where they are now. I'm still confused on some of what had happened prior to this book, but I think I got the highlights. I don't understand Camille's relationship with two alphas and Morio, It seems a bit much to have three big men, two alphas, all on Camille at once. There are a lot of characters, the inside circle and outside. It's a lot of information to take in for one little book. The plot is continued through each book, so although there wasn't a huge accomplishment in this book, there are a lot of smaller accomplishments

Camille has to go to otherworld to go get Trillian her first love. She has her soul bound husbands Smoky(dragon) and Morio (fox demon). They are searching for Stacia Bonecrusher, a general for the shadow wing. There is a lot of politics between the three Earth Queens , the fey Queen are the Queen of all other world, and the King of the unicorns.

As lost as I was when i read this the first time, I recently re-read it to get another perspective. I wasn't as lost, still somethings I don't know how they came to be, I don't think I would read a Camille book again, but I am interested in trying the next in Delilah point of view to see if its any better. Harvest Hunting (Sisters of the Moon, Book 8)

I love Galenorn's series and the world she creates. However, this book was kind of disappointing: Too much sex, too many loose ends, and not enough character development and plot.
