Product Description

Fourth Installment in the Raine Stockton Dog Mystery Series: a short novella

Dog trainer Raine Stockton has lived all her life in the quiet community of Hansonville, North Carolina. She is the daughter of a judge, the niece of a sheriff, and the ex-wife of a deputy. She does not lead the kind of life, generally speaking, in which people get buried in her back yard. But when Cisco, Raine’s mischievous golden retriever, digs up human bones beneath the site of what will soon be her new training kennel, mayhem ensues. With the state police swarming everywhere, concerns about a mass grave and suspicions of a serial killer, Raine is surrounded by chaos. But when her beautiful collie Majesty keeps disappearing and cryptic messages from a pet psychic only add to the confusion, Raine soon finds herself plunged into the midst of a mystery that is far too close to home. Can she and Cisco track down the truth before it’s too late?

5.0 out of 5 stars BONE YARD (Raine Stockton Dog Mystery), May 14, 2011
This review is from: Bone Yard (Raine Stockton Dog Mystery) (Kindle Edition)
As a fan of Donna Ball's Raine Stockton mysteries, I have been eagerly awaiting her next book for several years. Bone Yard does not disappoint. The characters (human and canine) are true to life and the plot is very believable. The only drawback is this novella left me wanting more of Raine Stockton. The good news is that another Donna Ball Raine Stockton mystery will be available soon!

I read the original 3 books in the Raine Stockton series about 3 years ago, and I was hooked by -well, let's be a bit honest here- the really spot-on portrayal of the dogs in the stories. And the main character, Raine, is a believable, straightforward dog lover & trainer. Set the stories in a beautiful setting like Appalachia, give it a tight, well crafted plot and a supporting cast of characters who seem real, and it makes for an exciting and satisfying read.

I've been a dog lover all my life, having started training my family's bulldog as a youngster, and I've spent the last 46 years of my life raising, training and showing Shelties (and some other breeds). Ms. Ball's depictions of the dogs rings true, as only someone who's been actually involved in the dog activities she writes about could write, and the result is a very engaging tale for dog folk, and for anyone who loves a great mystery.

A slight downside to this one is that the proofreading does not appear to have been up to par, so there are a few commas where they should not have been, a few commas missing, a capitalized word that should not have been, a few verbs that don't agree with the subjects, and a few just plain typos. I was so eager to read the story that I read through the boo-boos, but they were annoying in an otherwise terrific read.

I understand that this short novella is a link to the upcoming new book, (Silent Night) in the series, and, for me, it has certainly whetted my appetite for more (and more).

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone Yard, June 15, 2011
This review is from: Bone Yard (Raine Stockton Dog Mystery) (Kindle Edition)
Like the other reviewers I've read and enjoyed the three previous Raine Stockton novels. And I enjoyed revisiting Raine and Cisco in Bone Yard. This is a well written story with believable characters. If you like dogs and mysteries read this series.
