Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3—Even the zombies are lovable in Evans's charming Halloween-themed rendition of "Stone Soup." The skeletal Finnigin, a macabre but friendly feasting traveler, is known far and wide for his ravenous appetite. When he comes upon a beautiful barren land, he is sure that a wonderful Halloween feast awaits him. But a flying witch catches sight of him and warns the beast, the zombies, and the mummy of his approach. They all quickly pack away their prized stewed eyeballs and bat wings and turn Finnigin away when he comes calling. Undeterred, he cleverly begins to brew a soup with his magic bone, and, one by one, each creature emerges to investigate. Seasoned with sprightly, luminescent watercolors and the perfect dose of gross-out factor, this tale has all the right ingredients for a hearty storytime. Early elementary audiences will especially appreciate the spread that points out all the gloriously awful additions to the yellow-green soup—spider eggs, dried mouse droppings, toenail clippings, dandelions, and other assorted items fit for creatures of the night. Bone Soup is a welcome addition to the holiday repertoire, as well as a pleasurable read for students completing comparative folktale assignments.—Jayne Damron, Farmington Community Library, MI

"Drawn with a colorful, contemporary edge."--Des Moines Register

"The illustrations, which borrow paneled layouts and speech balloons from the comics, are filled with tiny visual jokes. Kids will eat Bone Soup up."--Washington Post

I purchased this book for my daughter's birthday a few weeks ago and can say that we have read this book at least 60 times since then.

In addition, this is one of the few children books that we enjoy reading over and over again with our Kids.

It's rare to find a children's book that is both written AND illustrated by the same author. Mrs. Cambria Evans does just that, and sets an incredible standard for other multi-talented children's book authors. The story is engaging and frankly, quite hilarious, and the pictures are rich and detailed to boot. We thought it was great!

All in all, Bone Soup is a rare gem because of its top-rate storyline(so funny and clever!) and its whimsically scary illustrations. Just like the other reviewers have said, the illustrations that accompany the storyline are not only well-crafted, but witty and multi-dimensional. Parents will be smiling along with their children as they enjoy this fantastic Halloween book together, around Halloween time and all year long.

Five stars for Bone Soup! It really gets you in the spooky mood.

Oh, and I'd love a plush Finnigan and bone soup cauldron for my niece and nephews....

We discovered Bone Soup last year around Halloween time. Our kids (ages 5 (boy) and 3 (girl)) love the illustrations and quirky story. This story walks the fine line well between too scary (our kids get scared easily) and still having some good Halloween spirit. In addition, this is one of the few children books that we enjoy reading over and over again with our Kids. As a kid I loved the Stone Soup story and this Halloween-themed adaptation is perfect. Last year my wife started a Bone Soup party where the kids' friends get together read this book and make "Bone Soup."

Wonderful zombie version of the classic 'Stone Soup'. Cute pictures, lovable characters and just enough gross out factor for my four year old. She loves it so much it's made it into the normal bedtime story rotation. It's not just for halloween!

What a fun story to read to my kids. Just glad we don't have to eat that soup! One of my boys wants to be Finnigin for Halloween. It's a fun twist on an old classic. You will love it!
