Love the Bone series. My son is not the best reader. Getting him to read anything is a painful task. I saw the "Bone" books at a sale and on a whim bought volume 1 and 2. Let me just say that he became ravenous for these books. I was at the store or at Amazon as soon as the next one was released. The story line is fantastic. The drawings are beautiful. These books have spread throughout our family. I'm sorry the series is over. But I'm sure to re-read them soon! I can't wait to see what Jeff Smith comes up with next. He truly is a master with this genre!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story and Great Art, May 11, 2009

This is a good series that adults and children can both enjoy. There are many funny moments and a compelling storyline, but it might be a little too scary for very young children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Both my Boys Loved this Book, July 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bone, Vol. 9: Crown of Horns (Paperback)
Both my boys (11 and 9) sat down and read this in one day.

Pros:
Keeps their attention
They loved it and read it from front to back in a few hours.
More in the series

Cons:
Lots of pictures (con for the parents)
Lots of slang words, not bad words but just makeup slang that does not really help the kids learn.
Your kids will want the other books in the series

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful, exciting finale to a most enjoyable series, January 1, 2012
This review is from: Bone, Vol. 9: Crown of Horns (Paperback)
Reason for Reading: next and last in the series.

A powerful, exciting finale to a most enjoyable series. Coming up to this last book I had some trepidation. Would it be worth the journey? Would it be a satisfying end? I can wholeheartedly say yes to both those questions. First off we are presented with a nice fat volume considerably larger than previous volumes, letting us know we can settle down for a good read. Action-packed, with a conclusion worthy of the eight previous volumes it took to get here. All major characters have their fates determined and get closure and it is not all "happy, happy, joy, joy" for everyone either. I'm not going to say anything about plot in this review, you'll just have to read this far yourself to find out on your own. But I highly recommend the series. Some volumes are better than others, but all rated high with me, either 4 or 5 stars. The story takes turns towards the darkside and is lightened up every now and then with a humorous side story. And all throughout the story, even though it does get mighty dark at times the humour is always there too. My favourite characters were the Red Dragon, Ted the leaf bug, and Bartelby. My favourite of the main characters was Smiley Bone. If you haven't had the pleasure yet, take some time out and read the series as it is a great ride with a satisfying ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book That Made My Daughter READ!, August 11, 2011

This is the last in a series of books/comics that MADE my child want to read. These books are written for children in the 10-13 years of age. My child HATED reading and it was difficult to help my child advance in school. The Teacher thought this book series might help. She was right! Now, my child reads voraciously and reading skills went from BELOW BASIC to ADVANCED by the end of the School year!
I have read these books and find them appropriate (in my opinion)for the above ages. I hope this helps and KUDOS to the Author for writing this entertaining and interesting series of stories. I hope this is a good reading idea for children who simply need something interesting to SPARK their desire for reading. As a Parent I would be remiss to reccomend a book without ENCOURAGING other Parents to read this first or ask their childs teacher to see if it is appropriate for your own child.
Thank-you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular finish for this series, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Bone, Vol. 9: Crown of Horns (Paperback)
This is the ninth and final book in Smith's Bone series. It did a very nice job of wrapping up the series, I loved it.

The book starts out bleakly; Thorn and Fone Bone have been beaten and locked in the dungeon, Gran'ma Ben is on the ramparts trying to fight off hordes of rat creatures, and Lucius is missing. This book takes us through the final battle, the search for the Crown of Horns, and the events following.

Illustration is in keeping with previous volumes and is very well done. I would recommend reading all previous volumes before this one so that you have a good appreciation for what is happening in this volume.

The book starts bleak but there is a lot of humor peppered throughout. There are a couple nice twists in the story, although for the most part it ends as you would expect it to end. It is a very solid fantasy and I enjoyed how it all ended. The story was nicely wrapped up.

There were some characters that I wish we had spent more time with; for example I think the character of Rock Jaw could have been used to make thing even more interesting.

Overall this has been just a wonderful fantasy graphic novel series and this installment only added to the wonderfulness. If you haven't picked it up to read, you should! It is just a wonderful series. Now I will be picking up Tall Tales (Bone Prequel) and the prequel novel Rose (Bone). I will also be checking out the future release Quest For The Spark #1 (Bone) illustrated by Jeff Smith and written by Thomas Sniegoski (who also writesA Kiss Before the Apocalypse: A Remy Chandler Novel the Remy Chandler urban fantasy series which I enjoy).

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Bone, Vol. 9: Crown of Horns (Paperback)
Bone is my favorite series after Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My favorite book out of the Bone series would probably be Crown of Horns. Phone Bone and his cousins get into so much trouble when they are together. Even though Bone and Thorn get hurt and into so many fights. Thorn when she's trying to save her world, she gets bitten. Also grandma, she back in power, she is helping a city fight, she is like a general. She is brave and faces her sister which is the leader of the Rat Creatures. Even though she knows her sisters weakness, Grandma Ben could probably kill her sister, but I don't know why she doesn't do that. Her sister was ripped in half during a war but the locus keep her alive. Grandma Ben was so surprised, and to me that is a big surprise too. Thorn has to go into the dragon cave and touch the Crown of Horns, to save the city's that have ghost circles. She is bitten by Kingdok and can't get closer to touch the Crown of Horns, so Bone goes and touches it but Thorn took the locus out of him. Before he touches it a herd of Rat Creatures come rushing in about to kill Bone and Thorn. Seriously though why didn't anyone follow her, she was going into a dangerous place and still only Phone Bone came with her. She was bitten, but I think that really even stop here Kingdok was died but he was just to big and strong to get her leg lose. So she got the nerve up and just gave Bone the piece of locus, but before Bone tried to touch it and nothing happens. Then Thorn says i am to scared to give it to you. Bone sacrifices his life for others, Bone touches it and the ghost circles disappear. Thorn gets her leg out of Kindoks mouth and runs out but she trips and cant walk or run. But before they met a baby rat creature and they trained not to kill. So out of nowhere he comes running, and Bone put Thorn Bartblys (the rat creature) and the get out. They go back to the city and the war is over Grandma Bens sister is dies now. The city is such a mess, but they fix it. I would say that they had an adventure or like a journey, there journey or adventure was amazing to me. I wish i could tell you more but if you read the series you'll get it and you will find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece of comedic fantasy., March 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bone, Vol. 9: Crown of Horns (Paperback)
It could be slightly unfair to call the Bone series "Comedic Fantasy" since it hardly makes light of it's own subject matter, yet the apparent humor is anything but consequential. I initially became aware of this series during a brief run of part of the first chapter in Disney Adventures comics, and later on acquired the One Volume Edition that has the entire story in one large paperback (Greatly recommend). When I heard that Scholastic was going to rerelease the series in full color I quickly hopped on-board and bought them as they came out. After book six however I could no longer find them in stores, fortunately Amazon has it all.

As the finale to the series I have to say that it's just as wonderful and expertly written and drawn with such masterful stroke as the rest of the series. Though by now there's not much left in the story to leave room for the more comical moments, and the epic climax is on par with that of most high fantasy I've read. The book, being the final chapter, wraps up all the plotlines in a rather epic way, connecting threads between previously unrelated characters. Yet while the story is nicely wrapped up at the end, you still are left wanting to know more about the fate of the characters as they finally come full circle.

I must also add praise to Jeff Smith, that while his story is accessible to people of all ages, he doesn't make compromises on his content, some of which can be violent or risque, yet it's a charming book that I wouldn't hesitate in the least from letting my children read and enjoy. Highly recommend!
