Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her lively fourth novel (after Torments ), Cantrell again mixes crime and horror fiction to chronicle strange and frightening events in the underworld drug trade of Phoenix City, N.C. In his free time, reporter J.J. Spencer writes stories about his fictional protagonist Jehovah Jones ("God has grown tired of The Job and decided to abdicate, come down to Earth and become an adventurer"). He also worries about his hard-drinking best friend, police detective Dallas Reid, who is investigating a series of drug-related murders with State Bureau of Investigation special agent Jackie Swann, a beautiful woman disturbed by the effects her job is having on her marriage. None of them realizes that a drug lord has brought in a voodoo master to wipe out his competition and that zombies are taking over the streets. The story moves along predictable paths, but Cantrell's fast-paced style redeems a multitude of sins, not least of which is the fact that the villain's actions are inconsistent with his supposed motive. The agreeable J.J. and a pair of final twists, of which one if not both will surprise most readers, provide enough diversion for anyone not unduly bothered by loose ends and discrepancies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Zombie Scenes, August 21, 2005
This review is from: Boneman (Hardcover)
BONEMAN is a creepy story with excellently written zombie scenes. I recommend this book to zombie fans, but in parts there are a few too many pages between the zombie portions. The male journalist character is annoying and I didn't care about him. But the horror scenes are great, and the last several chapters turn very quickly. The ending is cool but we never learn what happens to all the zombie pushers. Instead the ending focuses on the human characters, who just aren't as interesting as the zombies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boneman offers atmosphere with little else, November 22, 2000
By
This review is from: Boneman (Paperback)
Boneman starts off promisingly, with a drug dealer getting snuffed by a zombie dealer intruding on his turf. Then things start a gradual decline. Few of the characters seem realistic and, to make matters worse, the sole female character and her family troubles is so underdeveloped it feels ignored. I found myself getting angry at the author, why couldn't she get more in depth? Still there are isolated moments of creepiness, just not enough to support a full length novel, perhaps a short story.
