Alex Delaware is One of My Secret Pleasures, January 21, 2012
This review is from: Bones; an Alex Delaware Thriller (Paperback)
I have to admit that I have rather like Alex Delaware, the child psychologist who helps the police out in solving murders. Somehow, I feel that I shouldn't like these books so much, but the fact is that I really do.
When Alex is introduced to us in When the Bough Breaks, we see an empathetic man who is able to help the LA police pierce the veil on some psychopathic killers. He is smart, understands the evil mind, but is a little out of his element with the police. Throughout the series, he teams up with Milo Sturgis, the gay detective, and possibly the most interesting character in the series. Somewhere along the course of 20+ books, however, the line has become a little blurred, and Milo has become more of a psychologist while Alex has become more of a cop. And it is because he wasn't a cop that made his stories so interesting.
But in Bones, the old, gritty Alex is back. When women's bodies start showing up in a small LA bird sanctuary, the LA police are stymied. Most turn out to be prostitutes, a pattern common to serial killers. But one is a young piano teacher, and this break in pattern forces Alex to look beyond the common killer profiles. When the trail leads to a family of LA's super rich, Alex and Milo know there is more to them than meets the eye.
Bones is a welcome return to the Alex and Milo which made the series such a commercial success. The author's ability at creating real characters and to inject Alex's humanity into horrible, violent murders has always been a highlight of the series. His writing is of the no-frills variety, to the point and clear. These strengths have been present in all of his books. But with Bones, once again, Alex's stories have a well-drawn plot-line and which highlight how Alex is different from the protagonists of any of the other best-seller detective. series.
With Bones, the real Alex Delaware is back.
