Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the outrageous seventh episode of Haines's delightful Southern Belle series (after 2006's Bones to Pick), PI Sarah Booth Delaney explores the Mississippi Delta in search of clues to a scandalous murder. She has more than a professional interest: the accused killer is Sarah herself. When the New York cast of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof comes to Zinnia, Miss., lead actor Graf Milieu persuades Sarah to understudy for obnoxious prima donna Renata Trovaioli. Sarah dwells on memories of her acting experience in New York and her fling with Graf, further confusing her already complicated feelings for sheriff Coleman Peters. Then Renata is found dead in her dressing room, and Coleman arrests Sarah. Aided by her partner, Tinkie, and Jitty, a friendly ghost who has taken to wearing Scarlett O'Hara hoop skirts, the sassy heroine sets out to clear her name. While the astute reader may deduce the conclusion in advance, the humorous romp through the pages is well worth taking. (July)

From Booklist

A touring production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof brings Sarah Booth Delaney's former boyfriend, Graf Milieu, and her nemesis, actress Renata Trovaioli, to her southern hometown of Zinnia, Mississippi. Graf persuades Sarah Booth to be Renata's understudy, and Sarah Booth gets her opportunity to shine when someone poisons Renata after the first act on opening night. Evidence is found connecting Sarah Booth to the crime, and her boyfriend, cop Coleman Peters, arrests her for Renata's murder. Everyone who knew Renata hated her, however, leaving many other suspects. Released on bail, Sarah Booth and her friend Tinkie hunt for the real killer. Already upset because Coleman seems to be dragging his feet in divorcing his manipulative wife, Sarah Booth is stunned when he seems to believe she is a murderer, leaving her open to advances from Graf. As always in Haines' southern-belle series, the heroine receives advice from a ghost who lives in Sarah Booth's restored mansion, the ever-amusing Jitty. Fans of Nancy Atherton's Aunt Dimity novels will enjoy the ghostly presence in this charming southern cozy. O'Brien, Sue

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the series, August 1, 2007

HAM BONES shows that Sarah Booth and friends have what it takes to survive outside of Zinnia. Too many series grow stale over time, but like a fine wine, Carolyn Haines continues to improve. Snappy wit, intriguing characters, and more twists than the Mississippi River, HAM BONES is sure to satisfy anyone's hunger for a good mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Haines keeps it real, August 1, 2007
Sarah Booth Delaney (via Carolyn Haines) is a Southern Belle to her toenails, but as human as a fictional character can be. Sarah Booth is gritty, true to her heart and her raising, but screws up sometimes and doesn't necessarily learn from it. What Sarah Booth will do is make readers laugh, root for her, worry about her, and cheer when everything comes out more or less all right in the end, just as they would a dear friend. And flat-out fawnching for the next Bones book to find out what kind of a mysterious mess Sarah Booth will get herself into and (let's hope) out of next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new star in the Southern Sky., July 28, 2007
I really loved Ms Haine's newest edition to the Sarah Booth Delaney mysteries. The twist and turns of the mystery were delicate and deceptive, and the new characters who are introduced into Sarah Booth Delaney's entourage of friends are quite unique and mysteriously charming. Carolyn Haines has given us another glimpse of how well Sarah Booth can adapt to her ever changing role as slueth and her hidden talent as a potential star of the stage. Gentleman's Mint Julep Mix
