A Great Soundtrack, But with a Major Drawback,
By
This review is from: Bones (Audio CD)
Bones [Original TV Soundtrack] is a very good CD that fans of many different musical genres can enjoy. It is a good mix with some interesting songs (one of my favorites is an old-style jazz song "Black Star" by Eliza Lumley) and some great musical names such as techno faves The Crystal Method, powerhouse Sarah McLachlan, Stereophonics, Sinead O'Connor, and others. It is, however, lacking one theme that would have cemented it as an awesome soundtrack mix: different songs.
Although this is a very good CD, the only fast-paced songs throughout the ENTIRE CD are the "Bones Theme" and the remix of the "Bones Theme." EVERYTHING else is a slow/almost meloncholy song. Don't get me wrong -- this is very representative of Bones, and I do believe that most of these songs have been featured in episodes, and all of them are good. However, the songs featured on this soundtrack only deal with one aspect of this rich, multifaceted show. The one thing that would have made this a five-star album would have been the inclusion of upbeat/uptempo songs. For instance, "Hot Blooded," which Booth and Brennan (Bones) dance to in Brennan's apartment would have been a good inclusion. Other songs by The Crystal Method or the other techno/electronica bands that are featured on the show would have been welcome, as well as any other rock bands that do show up from time to time. So, while I reiterate that this is a very good, very enjoyable CD that many people can enjoy, please note that this is a VERY soft collection, and is a great mix to pop into a CD player when you are in the mood to relax - say, playing in the bathroom during a bubble bath. I give this CD four out of five stars.

Some of the best songs in one collection...,

If you watch Bones, you probably already have a taste for the modern, perfect music incorporated into the show. Here are a few good reasons to get this CD:
"Running up that Hill" from 2nd season's "Judas on a Pole" - with Placebo's unique, ultra-modern feel and deep, moving lyrics, I for one listened to this song over and over again, unable to stop craving the singular sound of this song. "Angel" - a beautiful balled worth buying in its own right, very utterly Bones. "Bring on the Wonder" - an oh-so-sad song once again worth its own CD, belonging utterly in the Bones compendium. If that's not enough, it'll hold you over until season 3 comes out.

This soundtrack has some very good music. It is unfortunate that the title sequence isn't part of a longer piece, but overall the music is very good. Different artists than I normally listen to and a slower pace to help calm the day down.

A nice complilation but missing a few favs,
This review is from: Bones (Original Television Soundtrack) (MP3 Download)
This has some nice songs, but some obvious favorites are missing. How could they not include Poco, the song Brennan's dad would sing to her? I'm also sad they didn't include "Pride" by Syntax, from the Woman in the Tunnel episode. I guess they can only fit so many songs onto an album but I believe they could have done away with a few of these. Just my personal opinion.

A fantastic soundtrack, well worth a listen even for those who aren't fans of the show. "Angel" by Sinead O'Connor is particularly lovely.

The Bones theme works fine, but honestly is not the reason I bought this soundtrack. There are several compelling reasons that I wanted this on my shelf--first, Sinead O'Connor's "Angel". Whatever you feel about Ms. O'Connor, her voice is a stunning instrument, and when unleashed on an emotional powerhouse like this song, I get chills. If you are only going to hear one track, that is the one that I would go for. Still, stopping with "Angel", however good it may be, would be missing out on some other wonderful songs. Kate Bush's "Running up that Hill" is one of the most intense pop songs ever written, stark and magical, but the 1980's version from Kate's "Hounds of Love" is a little dated to today's ears [don't let this stop you from learning to love Kate Bush--she is magnificent, and "Hounds of Love" is a pop masterpiece...but I digress]. Placebo's cover of this song is found on this soundtrack, and it is a stunner in its own right. They have lost none of the emotional content, and have focused it even further; if it were not for the presence of O'Connor's "Angel", this still would have been a good reason to buy the album. Eliza Lumley's cover of Radiohead's "Black Star" takes an odd turn--it is cabaret infused, which I would never have thought of. It is not completely successful, although it is interesting and enjoyable; but after hearing what Placebo did with a cover, it makes me long for a more placebo-esque approach here. The remainder of the tracks are by and large excellent singer/songwriter tracks, all quite enjoyable. I particularly enjoy the Sara Lov tune "Fountain", but there is not a dud among them. The extended mix of the Bones theme that ends the album helps remind you that this is a Bones soundtrack and not a Lilith Fair sampler, and it works no better or worse than you would expect. If you are a Bones fan, then pick up the album, you won't regret it. If you are not a Bones fan, then get this for "Angel" and "Running Up That Hill". You'll enjoy the rest as well.

The Soundtrack: A Wonderful Listen,

This soundtrack from the TV show BONES is at once atmospheric, inspiring, and beautifully bittersweet. Other reviews lamented the lack of up-tempo songs on this CD, and this dampened my enthusiasm for purchasing it at first. I did buy it, though, and was truly surprised at how much I loved these songs and how much enjoyment I got out of them. True, all the songs are slow and moody, and are not something groove or dance to, with the possible exception of the theme song. However, I think "heartfelt" would be a better description than "depressing" for this collection overall. They genuinely articulate feelings of love, doubt, loneliness, and estrangement. They have a way of gripping you and lingering in your mind. Really, really good.
It is very hard for me to pick favorites from this collection because the songs are all really good and definitely worth owning on CD. The ballad "Angel" and also the song "Tears and Laughter" caught me right away for the sheer power of the lyrics. The BONES theme is included both as the original 30-second segment played on TV and as a full-on 3-minute, 50-second remix that is a little on the long side, but still awesome. I recently discovered what a wonderful show BONES is, and I'm still fairly new to it. What BONES does really well, and what caught me right away, is the adept mixing of humor and really human drama. This collection is a good representation of the dramatic and sometimes poignant side of the show - the real heart of it. That is why is appreciate a collection like this over a more fun and lighthearted set. Overall, this soundtrack is a really good buy even if you are not a serious fan of the show. Personally, I would have loved to have even more when I was done going through the album. Also, it is never referenced in which episodes the songs appeared, and that is something I would have liked to know.
