1.0 out of 5 stars author with alzheimers, May 25, 2010
This review is from: Bonfire Night (Hardcover)
I honestly believe that Mitchell had Alzheimer s when he wrote this novel. This book is nothing more than an advertisement for expensive products. the dialogue is very very very hard to follow.Did i mention the dialogue is hard to follow.I have 3 chapters left to finishing the book and still have no ideal whats going on.I am glad i purchased the book however because now i have every first edition callan novel both American and British. If you can find a cheap copy of this book buy it to complete a set as i did. other than that there is no reason to purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars what the h*** happened to this book???, March 21, 2008
This review is from: Bonfire Night (Hardcover)
For those who know the old British TV series of Callan, about a government secret service assassin, this book is nothing but a major disappointment from beginning to about as far as you can manage to read into it. I still can't get past three-quarters. For anyone else, maybe you will like this.
I don't know what drugs Mitchell was sniffing when he wrote this book but the main character of Callan, the hard and nasty assassin, is now an uber-rich businessman in Spain with a toff woman, while smelly thief Lonely has done a computer course while in the nick and is now a super multi-millionare in a business partnership with Callan.
Not only are the characters almost unrecognisable, there are a host of other unmemorable characters including a female Hunter (too James Bond for me). The plot is something about an ex-East German interrogator after Callan, but it's hard to make any sense out of it. The style of writing is inexplicably difficult to read and often you can't tell who is who or even who is speaking or what is happening. It seems to be trying for a 'style', but I gotta say - it's missed badly. Pretend you never saw this book and your life as a Callan fan will continue untarnished.
P.S. Note to authors - don't change your style and your loved characters when that is what your readers buy. It just annoys them.
