Absolutely love this CD, reminds me of my high school years growing up in TZ just a few years ago, and Juma Nature and friends rhyme about everything from life, love, liberty, politics and just about anything else relevant. Mind you, it's in Kiswahili, but I still think anyone can appreciate the sounds of this album.

True talent, good sound... a great mix for anyone who loves rap/hip-hop and African music... this is a smooth, smooth album.

"VIVA TANZANIA!"

I am an Anglo whitey who has a fairly large selection of African music from the "Dark Continent" ranging through the classics/newer ones from Senegal and Mali through to township music from South Africa and also rai from Algeria (and maybe only one compilation disc of Tanzanian music). When I saw this disc as new in a market in Sydney for $15 or so I decided to take a chance on it as being something different. Now if you are used to hearing music sung in an African or other foreign tongue the fact that it is sung in Kiswahili hopefully will not bother you (I do not speak or have any knowledge of Swahili so in that sense the lyrics or content of this disc is "all Greek" to me so to speak, other than what the sufficiently detailed liner notes tell you). If the particular song is a rap about the price of bread, which I understand one of them to be, we just have to take their word for it! In a way I find the fact that they are singing in a language that you completely do not understand is in a way an advantage. You can simply focus on the rolling rhythm of the language and the music and this is why I find this such an interesting disc. There is nothing to distract from that. The basic thematic concerns of the disk are refreshingly therefore not about guns, drugs, money and ho's, unlike a lot of the hackneyed rap coming out of the US, which is basically nothing other than production line pop music with a predictable beat. The chosen songs are also not predictably the same in rhythmic content as a lot of that material is.

While in Kenya a few years ago I also bought a couple of burnt compilation discs which essentially gathered up some Swahili pop/rock/classics in a similar fashion.
