I am surrounded by fields and woodland. The voles love my sandy yard and lush gardens especially during dry spells when the fields and woods dry out. I have lost hundreds of dollars worths of shrubs and perennials to these little beasties. My lawn and gardens were a nightmare network of tunnels. I can relate to movie Caddyshack. I'd blow them up if I could. So...I've tried poison pellets and all manner of castor based products. The poison was useless. Other castor products were moderately helpful, but required frequent reapplication. Molemax actually works and repels the little beasties for 6 - 8 weeks. I'd tried so many things, I'd forgotten the name so I ordered another product at the same time. No comparison. MOLEMAX outperforms everything and lasts for weeks. Follow the directions to water it in...then sit back an enjoy a tunnel free existence. Focus application intently on the edges of the driveway and sidewalks.

Gophers ate the roots off all 5 of my large Rudbeckia Daisey plants just below the surface. Spreading these castor oil granules over our entire landscape area repulsed the gophers, and new Rudbeckia plants are now untouched. The granules were then spread over other parts of the lawn spreading away from the landscaped areas in two passes about 2 weeks apart, and there have been no more gopher tunnels or gophers, and no moles in the yard since then in 18 months. It was well worth the cost to be rid of these pests, which have been hard to eliminate in the past using other methods.

Product arrived when promised, and in good condition. Pricing was competitive. So far the product seems to be working but the real test is still to come. I have not found any competing products in the granular form that were competitive. The granulal mix is consistent and spreads consistently with a spreader.
=== spring 2010 Update,
I have a couple of years of testing in on this product. I finally am keeping voles "mostly" from destroying the lawn by using this and keeping vole poison in the bad areas. I found this repellent works OK but I needed a lot more than was advertised. You can smell it a little when it is put down and after substantial rain you'll need to apply more. Gets a bit expensive so I found large 10# bags that I now order. Overall, this is a small piece of controlling the voles but don't expect it to completely keep the buggers away by itself. Consider vole poison to assist with infestations. I did buy some vole control poison "tube" kits and they worked but were pretty ugly in the yard. I now use little "huts" to keep the poison dry...
=== Fall 2011 UPDATE
... OK, so it has been 3 years now. Wow, hard to believe! Anyway, I've had 3 seasons to apply the product in fall, winter and summer conditions. I have quite a problem in the fall and winter and have tried more repellent more often and reapplied after rain. I kept certain areas untreated as a control group for nearly 1 year. Unfortunately I noticed little if any difference between the treated and untreated areas. In summer there might have been a slight benefit but not enough to warrant buying this stuff as it is pricey after shipping. Unfortunately I no longer can recommend the product as after giving it 3 years and probably 350 pounds of the stuff, no discernible relief. I know poison is not everyone's cup of tea but the alternative is to stop by and reseed my lawn 3 times a year...

VOles had dug so many holes and tunnels in our garden and yard that they had actually raised the ground level before I figured out what was happening. I tried poison, but got worried that other animals might get into it, and they didn't seem too interested in it anyway. I tried fox urine pellets. They worked briefly, but then I think they got wise. I tried digging and flooding them out. I tried two other repellents without success. I had all but given up when someone suggested this. It did the trick.

I saw an increase in tunneling immediately after applying, and then they were gone. I started in the center of our yard, waited a week, treated more towards the middle, then finally did the whole yard to the borders of our property. We have about a half an acre. They are finally gone now. I treat around the perimeter about once a month to discourage new voles from moving in, and I watch for signs of them before they have a chance to be fruitful and multiply again. I can't tell you how much money I wasted on plants that were eaten from the roots and on other products before I found this.

I ordered my molemax after several very discouraging months of watching mole and gopher activity continually increase in my garden. I tried several other things before ordering the Mole Max on recommendation from a friend and it is the first thing that seemed to make a difference. The digging activity slowed to nothing and while I know I will need to reapply the molemax, the fact that it helped at all was greatly appreciated. Delivery of the product was also swift and easy.

Many of the reviewers who have rated his product below 3 stars are simply using it incorrectly. I've used Mole Max for over five years. You absolutely must apply on a regular basis. I have found an every other month application works. This schedule is based on the professional pest control company I use for common insect irritations. The pros use a very similar product and apply every two months. For this they charged $80 several years ago; probably more now. So for a fraction of that, I apply Mole Max myself. I have totally eliminated gopher mounds and holes. Voles are a little nastier, but I have kept them to a very small area consistently now for the past four years. Moles still like to show up around June, but now they tunnel only along borders/cement walks, not throughout my lawn. I guess they don't like to get the stuff in their eyes---it burns. So, don't apply before your snow/winter season and expect to be gopher-free in April! Mole Max simply will not last more that about 60 days. And for heaven's sake, don't assume one purchase and treatment will solve your pest issues.
