Long before "Stomp," there was "Bonk.",

Driving angry, tribal beats set against a backdrop of blues melodies, and excellent soulful singing, with faint elements of jazz and Swing for good mix. Let's not forget about the social staments either. Who can listen to songs such as "Money God," or "Big Hotel" and come away unaffected? This CD is going on 15 years old, and it still holds up extremely well, especially in light of today's rather vapid musical scene.

Five drummer/percussionists, five singers, a harmonica player, and a keyboardist, which (after accounting for overlap) comprise one of the most phenomenal seven-person bands ever to dare to believe that their formula would work. And it did. Not commercially, granted, despite the minor success of "Breakaway" (which was given a boost by its appearance on the soundtrack of _Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure_).
I wouldn't trade this album for anything. There's not anything even approaching a weak song on it, and its high points -- I nominate "Nation," "Big Hotel," "Money God," and "Devil's Song" by a slim margin -- are simply stunning. While I try to keep up, there are still very few albums that can lift my spirits and make me dance around the room the way this one can. What with the three terrific B-sides/remixes now available on Mushroom's reissue, you officially no longer have an excuse not to join in the joy.

A Blast! Strong Lyrics & Beat,

We heard the overture to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and said "hey! I know that album!"Breakaway had that dubious distinction. But it got me and my wife thinking of this great album and I decided to order today on Amazon (and hopeffully look for other albums). They have an industrial sound with fairly "hard" beat, but with lyrics that are interesting and thoughtful. Definitely worth having in a collection that includes Depeche Mode and other industrial sounds, as well as those Tori Amos and Fiona Apple fans that like the harder edges of those artists.
