5.0 out of 5 stars Long before "Stomp," there was "Bonk."
Driving angry, tribal beats set against a backdrop of blues melodies, and excellent soulful singing, with faint elements of jazz and Swing for good mix. Let's not forget about the social staments either. Who can listen to songs such as "Money God," or "Big Hotel" and come away unaffected? This CD is going on 15 years old, and it still holds up...

Let's not forget about the social staments either. Who can listen to songs such as "Money God," or "Big Hotel" and come away unaffected? This CD is going on 15 years old, and it still holds up extremely well, especially in light of today's rather vapid musical scene.

Five drummer/percussionists, five singers, a harmonica player, and a keyboardist, which (after accounting for overlap) comprise one of the most phenomenal seven-person bands ever to dare to believe that their formula would work. And it did. Not commercially, granted, despite the minor success of "Breakaway" (which was given a boost by its appearance on the soundtrack of _Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure_).

I wouldn't trade this album for anything. There's not anything even approaching a weak song on it, and its high points -- I nominate "Nation," "Big Hotel," "Money God," and "Devil's Song" by a slim margin -- are simply stunning. While I try to keep up, there are still very few albums that can lift my spirits and make me dance around the room the way this one can. What with the three terrific B-sides/remixes now available on Mushroom's reissue, you officially no longer have an excuse not to join in the joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blast! Strong Lyrics & Beat, September 17, 2001

We heard the overture to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and said "hey! I know that album!"

Breakaway had that dubious distinction. But it got me and my wife thinking of this great album and I decided to order today on Amazon (and hopeffully look for other albums). They have an industrial sound with fairly "hard" beat, but with lyrics that are interesting and thoughtful.

Definitely worth having in a collection that includes Depeche Mode and other industrial sounds, as well as those Tori Amos and Fiona Apple fans that like the harder edges of those artists.

This album is great. Take depressing bluesy lyrics and set them
to peppy uplifting blues/swing music. Every song is a winner, this is my second CD of this album after three cassettes as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars off-the-wall bongo drummin' techno funk that mesmerizes you., November 4, 1998

it's the vocals, gotta be the female vocals that will get your attention. this no guitar group band provides a carnival atmosphere for an upbeat blend of bongos and techno and vocals. a combination of rusted root and new order.

well worth the $12.49 suggested price. particularly striking are "big hotel" and "boy wonder".

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilled to find this!!, August 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bonk (Audio CD)
I am so thrilled to find this album. I had it on tape for many years but finally lost it in a move. When I tried to order it in I was told I could no longer get it. This is a real treat for me. I remember when I was going to school, I would listen to this album while studying. Somehow it made the studying easier, relaxed me I suppose. I also would listen to it when I took the bus to visit my mom. The trip seemed to take less than the three hours I remember when I had this tape playing in my walkman. The music on this album holds a lot of nice memories for me and that is why I am so happy to find that I can indeed order it in.

I have an old episode of MTV's 120 Minutes on VHS (from back in the 80's when they actually played "underground", unknown bands). It featured videos by The Cure, The Swans, and Big Pig. All I remember is a guy with a shaved head in black leather and combat boots doing somersaults across my television. It rocked! I had forgotten about them until I found the tape in a moving box. I have never heard anything like it, and probably never will again! Worth a listen....

5.0 out of 5 stars I forgot and now I remember. Thanks to Black Party 01', March 31, 2001

I was recently in New York for Black Party. When out of nowhere I hear BIG PIG. WOW! I was blown away. I forgot all about this album! After I got home, I ripped through my house to find my long lost love of a tape. Found it! Amazon.com it's now time to turn this old forgot and distorted tape into a CD so I can play it in surround sound. Watch out neighbors! Here comes Big Pig! If you like Big Sound, Black Leather, and Bad attitude, then this is for you. GET IT. You won't be sorry. Except for your neighbors.

4.0 out of 5 stars minimalist rhythm & blues, September 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bonk (Audio CD)
Very unique sound. No guitars & a female lead singer from Sri Lanka. The cut called "Tin Drum" will mesmerize you. For some reason I had some of this music on the same tape as Wang Chung's soundtrack work for the movie "To Live & Die in L.A."--it seemed to fit well together.

I first heard the songs 'Breakaway' and 'Nation' as a child while watching David Copperfield's live TV performances of Mystery On the Orient Express and Flying: Live The Dream back in the early '90s. I recently viewed clips from those performances on Youtube and, after years of wondering, decided to do some research to find out who sang 'Breakaway'. After discovering that the song was from Big Pig's 'Bonk' album, I listened to the rest of it and instantly became a fan of the album, and was also quite pleased to find that 'Nation' was included on the album. It is a great industrial album and I admire how such great material was created with just vocals, percussion, drums, and keyboards without the presence of a guitar or bass player.
