A Long Wait For An Old Favorite,
By Joanneva12a (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To Bonnie From Delaney (Audio CD)
I bought the album when I was 15 and wore the grooves right off the disc. Years later, I tried in vain to locate another copy, but this wonderful album had become all but extinct."To Bonnie from Delaney" is southern R&B with a kind of down home soul quality that only the Bramletts could do. I am surprised it took 30 years, and even more surprised to see it come out as a Japan import rather than an American digital remake. ( Now all I have to wait for is Claudia Lennear's "Phew" to come out on CD! ) Although the songs are just as I remembered ( minus the pops and scratches ), I was disappointed with the overall remastering quality which I feel is lacking and which is the only reason for the 4 star rating. Most people might be more familiar with the then popular "Soul Shake", but my personal favorites are the honky tonk piano on "Miss Ann" and the medley with Bonnie singing "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean" They played with many familiar names such as Dave Mason, Tina Turner, Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell, as well as Eric Clapton. Even though they seem to have disappeared into obscurity, to this day no one sounds like Delaney and Bonnie.

ANY album that features Duane Allman makes it special. TO BONNIE FROM DELANEY is no exception. A very underrated album that should be noticed by not only just the Duane Allman fan, but for music lovers from all over. GET THAT ALBUM!

Best, Please Reissue,
This review is from: To Bonnie From Delaney (Audio CD)
This is Delaney-and-Bonnie best album. I repeat exactly as before "I've got it on vinyl, but that won't last forever. Why won't Atlantic reissue it?"

"Fred" has it right: any record featuring Duane Allman is reason enough to own. Other than Hendrix, no one brings guitar to an entirely different place. Stand up, open up your volume (use those old floor standing speakers you keep downstairs) and find out. But Delaney and Bonnie (especially Bonnie) rule the scene here in society with Eric and the damn best American crowd at Muscle Shoals of Aretha and Wilson, King, Boz, Otis, Percy and oh so many others, it represent the richest American R&B experience you and I will ever witness. Ever.

A Souful-R&B-Boogie-Down-Groove-Gospel-Revival!!!!!!,

Yea, Delaney Bramlett and Duane Allman sure were fast friends. And this album is where it really shows. This is the kind of Soulful-R&B-Southern-Boogie-Down-Groove-Gospel-Revival Exxxxxxtravaganza that could only have been brewed up by Delaney Bramlett, Duane "Sky Dog" Allman and the peerless session players known as The Muscle Shoal's Swamppers. Spin this puppy on your new Digitized Dolbyized Surround-Sound CD player and get into the groove. Hell it might almost sound as good as that old vinyl "Long-Player" record you slipped onto your snappy stereophonic turntable back in your dorm-room in 1970. I just can't seem to get tired of their music. Loved it back then and still love it today.
Also, Highly-Reccommended: Home by Delaney & Bonnie. Recently reissued vintage Stax Records. P.S. I learned today, Jan 3, 2009 of the passing of Delaney Bramlett. What an incredible legacy of great Southern R&B he leaves behind. Having played with the likes of Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, George Harrison, Jim Gordon, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Raddle and so many more...He surely will be missed. |
