The perfect product for bonsai interested maple lovers,
By
This review is from: Bonsai with Japanese Maples (Hardcover)
Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams has all you will ever need to know about maples in bonsai. Excellent colour photos, techniques are explained in adequate depth and it is well worth the price, I paid shipping to Australia just for this product. The only issue of concern is that one should read a basic bonsai book for a few clarifications on wording, that is to say it is written for an intermediate-bonsai audience.

I first saw this book as a bonsai student but it was already out of print. After years of searching, and seeing prices over $150, I am really happy to see it in re-print. It is the seminal Japanese maple book with many ideas that can be used for any deciduous tree. I strongly recommend it for anyone doing bonsai.

I was excited to see the title of this book, as I have hundreds of--probably one thousand--volunteer red Japanese maples (Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum') coming up in my yard. The book does give very clear directions on how to take a young maple (two or three years old) and shape it into a classic Bonsai shape, and there are several different styles. The instructions are clearly written and well illustrated. However, what I would like to have seen included additionally was something else that I know is also done, which is to take a somewhat more mature tree, of maybe seven or eight years old or more, which has not yet been trained at all, and to accentuate its idiosyncrasies. Still, for anyone who has access to young maples and is a novice to Bonsai (as I am), this book opens up a lot of possibilities. I am happy to have it.

For the topic and for the money, this is the best book going. Text is clear and meaningful, photos are sharp and true to color, and the sketches are far and away the best illustration of what the author is trying to get across with regard to future plans and designs for the subject tree. Excellent book.

One of the BEST!,
This review is from: Bonsai with Japanese Maples (Hardcover)
In the 25+ years that I have studied, practiced and taught Bonsai, this is one of the books that I have learned the most from. It specializes in different cultivars of Japanese maples, but the techniques described in this book can be applied to almost any species of tree! The book is extremely well done, very informative and very easy to understand. I received this book for Christmas last year, 2010, and even though I've been into Bonsai since 1986, I still found that it had MUCH to offer!
I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Bonsai whether your are just beginning or if you have already been at it for a while!

I was recommended this book by knowledgeable bonsai enthusiasts. The techniques Mr. Adams shares are well thought out and written in terms that are easy to grasp and understand. I found his book about the different Japanese maple species and bonsai husbandry very helpful in that he touches upon interesting horticultural aspects of why and how each of the techniques are used. This book is for someone who has good bonsai husbandry skills and experience, and is looking for more refined techniques in working with, styling and creating beautiful Japanese Maple Bonsai. I liked it very much.
