Distilled knowledge from prior editions dating to the 1960s, arranged by level of expertise, including recommended tools, soils, pots, plants according to one's past experience with bonsai. Inspiring and informative photos, best of the "get to know about bonsai" books; encourages development of skills and techniques. A must have for the budding bonsaist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beginners only, September 21, 2006

I ordered this book after receiving and reviewing a number of others, so while I'm still fairly new to bonsai, I have done a good bit of reading on the subject. Lang's work is very general and makes a reasonable starting point, but I don't recommend it to anyone with some experience and background. More satisfying are Harry Tomlinson's "Bonsai" and Colin Lewis' "Bonsai Survival Manual," although I found the latter also rather limited. Of the books I've read to date, Tomlinson is the one I would recommend most and whose other books I'm likely to look at or purchase.

I have been interested in bonsai for a few years now and this was the first book that I purchased. It is succinct, has detailed photographs, and enough information to get one started with bonsai. I still refer to it even though I have bigger and newer books. Great buy for the beginner.
