It is extremely lightweight (cannot be used as a weapon), each button has a different tone to it AND it looks real (besides the fact that it's not brass). She loved it! She plays it all the time and unbelievably, it's not the most annoying toy she has. I would recommend it to anyone with young children interested in musical instruments.
I think kids who show signs of interest in music will enjoy it. It actually sounds like a harmonica but what do you expect for $14. Still, the valves do work and produce different notes so that's really the point to it. Getting them familiar with how an instrument works. They even have a musical pieces on the back of the box with color coded notes so your young Dizzy Gilepsie and can follow along.
Aw go ahead a grab it, why not?
My son Miles approves of this message.
I'm sure now that that one we originally had was not the Bontempi brand. The Bontempi is made of that thin plastic while (I believe the $24 one) is like what we had - that thicker waxy feeling plastic.
The first only broke after a year of hard daily use and a guest who didn't see it before they stepped on it. This new one, I fear won't last as long.
Consider the $24 one if you think you're child will really love to play it as much as mine does.
Maybe it is because this isn't an American toy (it's an Italian company), this is more civilized than usual, and less obnoxious than most American toys. The trumpet is made from a lightweight plastic, which feels like it should be that cheap plastic crap that shatters easily, but it isn't. This thing is lightweight and amazingly tough. While I am sure it CAN be broken, my offspring hasn't managed to do it yet, and she is tough on toys.
Most importantly though, no, it doesn't make obnoxious trumpet noises, more like a soft harmonica kind of noise. Someone designed this thing with the sanity of the parents in mind. It actually sounds pretty.
The toy is functional as a musical instrument, and even comes with some sheet music printed on the box. Overall a good purchase, and if she asks for a saxophone next we will buy from the same company again.
UPDATE: A full year later this toy remains unbroken. The kiddo is still playing with it too.
My son is 3, so I didn't want it to be too hard for him to play. However, I play the trumpet, and wanted it to be a little realistic in how he needed to blow to get sound, rather than just blowing into something that sounds like a kazoo and doesn't take any breath support to get a sound. I decided to go ahead and try this one, figuring we could return if it was a piece of junk, since you cannot lose with Amazon's excellent return policy.
He opened it this morning, and has played with it, on and off, the whole day. He is able to make a sound with no problem at all, and the sound produced is actually really good, in my opinion, for a plastic toy trumpet. There are four keys to press (not 3 like a real trumpet) which was sort of disappointing for me, since I'd prefer it actually mimic a real trumpet in look, but my son loves that there are four, since he's about to turn four. Each key makes a different pitch, which I was thrilled to hear, since so many toy instruments do not do this. The sound of the notes does not sound like a kazoo, but doesn't obviously sound like a real trumpet either.Read more ›
