Amazon.com Review

Boo and Baa--both sheep--go to the woods to pick blueberries, hoping all the while that there are no ants around. During their picnic lunch break, Baa notifies Boo that there is an ant on his sandwich. Unbeknownst to them (and noticed only by the most perceptive picture-perusers), their picnic spot is right next to a gigantic swarming anthill. They bolt, bravely pole-vaulting a creek. Much to their delight, they find not only some lovely blueberry bushes on the other side, but a nice, ant-free spot to finish their lunch. The beauty of this simple story is in the details. For starters, the cartoonish sheep could not be cuter. Their expressions when Baa spots the first ant and when Boo sits in wide-eyed, post-ant shock are priceless. When they ford the stream, a sideline frog hops out of danger. When "Boo and Baa spend a long time picking berries," Baa admires a flower, while Boo goes eye-to-eye with a snail on a stump. Readers who fall in love with Olof and Lena Landstrom's Boo and Baa (like we have) won't want to miss Boo and Baa Get Wet (and boy, do they!). (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-These satisfying little books feature two droll sheep that manage to muddle through everyday mishaps to live happily ever after. In Get Wet, they encounter a thunderstorm and menacing shapes in the dark. Still, they manage to retrieve their croquet set, though everything, including the sheep, gets a good soaking. Ants and a creek present obstacles to a picnic in Woods, but a patch of yummy blueberries saves the day. These slim books are ideal for young listeners and could also be used as beginning readers. Each page has a sentence or two and a picture that clearly illustrates the action. Boo and Baa's expressive faces stand out and add charm to the simple, pleasing stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boo and Baa and Berries: Soothing Action for the Toddler, May 24, 2005
This review is from: Boo and Baa in the Woods (Hardcover)
The first thing that strikes you in "Boo and Baa" in the Woods is the unusual combination of shiny pages and soft colors. The sheen engages you and the velvety textures soothe. This is a small storybook for toddlers featuring the Landstrom's two sheep. This time out, "Boo and Baa are going to the woods to pick berries." The sheep seem prepared--they've studied a map of the woods--but when they get to the forest they can't find any berries. "Can someone have picked them all?" Boo asks.

They take a lunch break and Baa notices an ant on Boo's sandwich. One ant turns into scores of ants ("There are ants everywhere! Boo and Baa were sitting next to an anthill!"). and they flee to the creek. Another challenge faces them as they figure out how to ford it. The book includes many of these discussion points for you and your toddler or kindergarten-aged kid: What would you bring on a berry-picking trip? Why do ants like picnics? How would you get over across a creek? A very funny set of pictures shows Boo and Baa pole-vaulting over the river! Baa's pole gets stuck in the stream, but she spots a field of blueberries on the other side! The story has action and age-appropriate interest. Although there's not a lot of humor, the story's action, age-appropriate relevancy, and lush, shaded forest (with details such as mushrooms, a frog, a pinecone, and the cleverly disguised anthill) are very appealing. Another simple story beautifully told and illustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such lovable little sheep!, March 28, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Boo and Baa in the Woods (Hardcover)
The Boo and Baa books are perfect for little readers - and the adults reading to them! The storylines revolve around everyday activities that little ones can relate to, and there is always a little bit of adventure, and plenty of humour in them - which makes the 4,536th reading bearable for the adult! The text is short but to the point, and can easily be elaborated on by the adult reader. The pictures are absolutely brilliant in their simplicity, but if you really look at them you will find plenty to talk about with your little ones. The facial expressions of these rather clueless little sheep are priceless! Get to know Boo and Baa - and fall in love!

4.0 out of 5 stars To appreciate you must understand the world of Boo and Baa, January 21, 2001

This review is from: Boo and Baa in the Woods (Hardcover)
My 2-year-old daughter owns every Boo and Baa book and she loves them all. Just tonight as the lights went out she wanted to know what happened to the ant on Boo's sandwich, a la "Boo and Baa in the Woods." Through her delight for these sheep I have learned that they are great models of cooperation, optimism and good humor. Frankly the humor went over my head until she showed me the light. Captivating simple stories for two-year-olds. Buy them!
