Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When the avian prima donna introduced in Grumpy Bird (2007) gets bonked on the head by a ball and starts to cry, not Raccoon’s kiss, Rabbit’s hug, a cookie from Beaver, or a Band-Aid from Fox can stop the flow of tears. Though Tankard offers no definite clues in either the short text or his brightly colored woodland scenes, readers are likely to suspect after a while that Bird is milking the injury—especially when, seeing all his friends likewise bursting into tears, he loudly announces that he’s “ALL BETTER NOW!” Not only will Bird’s histrionics strike chords of recognition in parents, but the wide-eyed, very simply drawn animals suspended against collages of reworked photos and sketched-in shrubbery will also catch and hold the attention even of very young audiences. Bet high on this becoming another storytime winner, just like its predecessor. Grades K-3. --John Peters

Product Description

Bird and Raccoon are playing ball, when Bird gets bonked on the head. "Boo hoo hoo!" he cries. What will make Bird feel better? A kiss? A cookie? A bandaid? Bird's friends Raccoon, Rabbit, Beaver, Sheep, and Fox are full of sweet and funny ideas.

Perfectly pitched and hilariously imagined, this charming story about a universal experience will put a smile on the face of every child who has suffered a boo-boo and every parent who has struggled to come up with just the right way to give comfort.

"Now, there is a story worth telling." --The LA Times

"Tankard's deceptively simple tale is a useful tonic for moody kids -- and their parents -- but the best thing about it is the comic perfection of Bird's face as he marches along in a fury." --The Wall Street Journal

* "The message that your friends still love you even when you're in a bad mood -- and that a good walk and some companionship can do wonders -- shines through." --Quill & Quire, starred review

"Tankard's illustrations alone will cheer up any bad mood."

--Parent & Child

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurray for another Bird book!, April 27, 2009
By kmango (Maryland) - See all my reviews
After becoming completely smitten with Grumpy Bird, our family was so delighted to follow Bird on a new adventure with his darling band of forest friends. The characters are whimsical indeed, but with just the right dose of reality: not all days are good, and heads sometimes do get bumped. Thankfully, friendship (and distraction by good friends) is the best medicine! Bird is a wonderful preschool anti-hero -- loveable in his orneriness, because we ALL have those moments.

If you are new to Tankard's Bird, I'd definitely start with Grumpy Bird -- it's hard to beat. But for the seasoned Bird veteran, Boo Hoo bird is a welcome sequel.

My grandchildren ages three and five absolutely love this book and also Grumpy Bird by the same author. They ask for them to be read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, April 1, 2009
This is the second book by Tankard in this series. It is fantastic. The first book Grumpy Bird was great also. In this story Bird is playing catch with Raccoon and gets bonked on the head. All of Bird's friends try to make it better by different means. A kiss, a hug, a cookie, a game and a band-aid all do not help. All of Bird's friends, Beaver, Raccoon, Sheep, Beaver and Fox cry because they cannot help bird.

Tankard tells simple stories with great illustrations that will teach children great messages. His books are ones I share with my children and think they are great for children of all ages.
