5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of country music and alternative rock
I recommend this album very strongly. I purchased after hearing "You Blew Me Off", and quickly found that their were a half dozen better cuts than that. I can't stop listening to "Naked Albino", with its incredible melody and lyrics, and "Loveless", "The Most", "Nothing Better to Do" and "Tabacco Spit" are...

2.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't buy it...
First of all, this is NOT alternative, it is some kind of country/classic rock. Trying to mix rock and country could only lead to disaster. The one good song is "you blew me off" the rest are just the whining tone of country music. The lyrics are not poetic at all, simply put together 'cause they rhyme, the cover is misleading, you think it's a rock band or...

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of country music and alternative rock, May 29, 1999
This review is from: Boo-Tay (Audio CD)
I recommend this album very strongly. I purchased after hearing "You Blew Me Off", and quickly found that their were a half dozen better cuts than that. I can't stop listening to "Naked Albino", with its incredible melody and lyrics, and "Loveless", "The Most", "Nothing Better to Do" and "Tabacco Spit" are superior to 95% of what you'll hear on rock radio. I'm not sure the amount of cross-over appeal the album will have, but my kids only had to listen to a few cuts to request I play it in the car. It has supplanted Third Eye Blind as their favorite. I didn't know who the heck Bobby Bare, Jr. was before buying the album. Now I consider him a songwriting genious. I've always loved Jason & The Scorchers and Dash Rip Rock. This album is more rock than rockabilly, and the freshest sound I've heard in a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars boo-tay review, July 12, 2000
This review is from: Boo-Tay (Audio CD)
Boo-Tay Bare Jr.'s debut disc is an excellent dose of Country-Rock madness. "Nothin' Better To Do" should of gotten tons of radio play, but again the programers all over this fine land seem to be blind when there is good music floating around. "You Blew Me Off", a alt.rock hit I can't believe it, with it's Gary Glitter Rock & Roll Pt.2 mixed in with it. Other great songs on this disc are "Tobacco Spit", "Patty McBride", "Loveless", "I Hate Myself" and "Why Won't You Love Me". Bobby Bare should feel very proud of his son, Here's hoping Jr. can continue making some more good music in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bare Jr. rocks all though out this album!, May 5, 1999

I'm gonna be honest here, Bare Jr. definitely isn't for everyone. They get a very unique sound from the use of the dulcimer. I saw these guys when they opened for the Black Crowes in Houston. They were greatly unappreciated in my opinion. I got to meet Grimey and Tracy Hackney after there show and they were very nice towards me. They even signed my ticket for me. The reviewer who said that Bobby Bare Jr. is obsessed with 17 year old girls obviously doesn't understand "male drive". Highlights include "The Most", "Faker", "Love-Less", and of course, "You Blew Me Off." If you are into hard rock with a bit of country, this cd is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, January 24, 2004

I was first introduced to Bare Jr. and this CD while I was doing some work with a friend. Most of his music dominated the stereo for the two days we spent working, and most of it was unfamiliar to me. After one listen to this little gem, the lyrics were trapped in my head. They remained trapped in my head for several months until I asked my friend the name of the band, and consequently the next day I purchased this CD.
It was all I remembered and more! The harsh vocals, the powerful guitar and dulcimer play, and of course the wit filled lyrics. Every song on this CD is Great!
It wasn't until a year or so later that I had the privelege to see these guys live, and not enough can be said about the experience, and energy of their live show. I also HIGHLY recommend their other masterwork, "Brainwasher", and the new step in Bobby's career, his "solo" work as The Young Criminal's Starvation League. Although quit different from his previous BAre Jr. work, the song writting is tremendous (and may posses a little more maturity), the music splendid and of course the energy is all there (just listen to the live tracks on "OK...I'm Sorry" or do yourself a GREAT favor and GO OUT and see them play if they come within 200 miles of your home town!

Really like this. An edge to the otherwise bland alt/country genre

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the year, May 14, 1999
By A Customer

I first heard this album in a store and thought it was a new Son Volt album. I listened to the first four songs and immediately bought the album. The rest of the disc follows in the footsteps of the first four songs, that is, solid rock with more than a twinge of country. I am not a country music fan, but this album can definitely crossover into rock or alternative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll revived, April 28, 1999
This review is from: Boo-Tay (Audio CD)
I saw these guys live in Austin when they opened for the Black Crowes. They rocked the house! If you get a chance to see these guys live you should take it. They are full of energy and old fashioned rock'n'roll attitude. They were good fit with the Crowes, who of course are at the front of the back to basics rock revolution. These guys have good range of songs. Before the show I had only heard "You Blew Me Off." I was pleasantly suprised to find out these guys could rock out with more than one tune. Buy the album and see them live.

If you like Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown, the Jayhawks, Old 97's, Son Volt, or Wilco this album is right up your alley. Bare Jr. is just plain in your face country rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even my kids like it !, January 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Boo-Tay (Audio CD)
Being from Nashville, I had to buy this CD. It takes a couple of times through the disc before the masterful lyrics really grab you. I keep 10 discs loaded in my car and this one has not left since it went in. My kids have pretty good taste in music (despite what their mother buys for them) and they love this CD (I can't let them hear all of the songs - several have a bit of 'cussin). This disc rocks pretty hard and, like I said, the lyrics are priceless.
