1.0 out of 5 stars Not Appropriate For Children September 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm very confused by all the glowing reviews of this book. First the positives: beautifully illustrated and it's a good length. Okay, now onto the problems. It felt like the author just pulled rhyming words out of the air and then made the story around what he could rhyme. It is about a ghost and a bully, who in one illustration is giving the finger to another character. The characters were confusing. There is a ghost, a bunch of animals, and a ... grape? Still scratching my head about that one. I would have given it two stars but the picture where one character gives the other the finger was way out of line in a kids book. I feel bad giving out such a negative review but someone who is capable of producing a beautiful book such as this could have went one step more and made it appropriate for children and made it make sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Illustrations October 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The illustrations are definitely the highlight of this book. That's not to say the story and the writing weren't good too--on the contrary, it was a delightful little story--but the illustrations are just completely eye-popping and extremely well done. They're definitely better than the illustrations in many of the books I read when I was a kid.

My four year old thought the story was great too. He's usually more of a fan of dinosaurs and superheroes, but this makes a nice change as we edge into the Halloween season. He's been seeing all kinds of scary movies on TV, and this book gets him out of that dark mindframe of killers and monsters--no more nightmares! Definitely a great way to end the day, and I'd recommend this to any of the parents of my son's friends.

What I liked most about it (well, besides the illustrations maybe) was the nice little moral that wrapped it up at the end, along with all the animals Boo meets along the way. The illustrations really help charge your imagination to get into the story.

Great book and lots of fun!

Boo is a friendly ghost who just wants a little peace. But when neighborhood bully, Nugget, captures his friend, Grape Face, Boo realizes he can't stand idly by. He has to help his friend. Boo learns that teamwork can save the day.

Boo and the Backyard Zoo is a cute book told in rhyme. Kids will enjoy the colorful illustrations and whimsical characters. If you're looking for a Halloween book for kids, ages 4-7, with a nice lesson in doing what is right and helping others, then this book is one to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleverly rhymed with outstanding illustrations. November 15, 2012
Format:Paperback
Boo and The Backyard Zoo by Pat Hatt, Illustrations by Ozzy Esha

Today it's all about teaching children to work together to solve problems. Boo And The Backyard Zoo is a perfect example of this lesson. As a bonus, the story is cleverly rhymed with outstanding illustrations.

Current issues regarding how to deal with bullies are subliminally addressed as the evil Nugget and his Flashy Parakeets roam the streets.

A great book for children to enjoy.

Everybody likes a story where the underdog comes out on top, and in Pat Hatt's BOO AND THE BACKYARD ZOO we get a taste of just that.

Boo is trying to help his friend escape and see his dream come true, but to do that he has to rely on the help of others. Can they come together and see justice done or will they be divided? That is what readers get to see, and it comes together through fun rhymes and memorable characters.

Pat Hatt is not just a storyteller, but someone who is able to grab your attention and not let it go until the very end.

Upon opening the book I was greeted with stunning illustrations that accompany a tale full of imagination and whimsy. The cast of characters in this work of children's literature are so charming that your children will ask you to read this book over and over again. An unlikely hero is found in Boo the ghost who rallies a backyard crew of critters to rescue Grape Face from captivity. In the end we see that no matter our differences, we can love one another and work together as friends for a common cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun tale for all July 15, 2012
Format:Paperback
Boo is a lovely tale that incorporates concepts such as freedom, cooperation and teamwork. The story is really fun and the illustrations are very good, certainly something that will catch your child's eye for sure. Pat Hatt has an amazing gift of rhyme and this gift is showcased in Boo and the Backyard Crew, where the rhymes create a natural cadence that in itself, will create a happy tone in the readers voice, a great quality to any children's book. Your kids will love this one.

More About the Author

Patrick Hatt can be found in the East Coast of Canada. He hates writing these things but doesn't mind talking in the third person. He dabbles in a little of this and a little of that, not afraid to attempt something new.

He is owned by two cats, one of whom has his own blog, It's Rhyme Time. Yeah a rhyming cat, who knew? He would be considered a both person when it comes to cats and dogs.

He is also quite the movie and TV buff. As you can probably tell does not take himself seriously and has more stuff in his head than is needed. Thus the novels as just one more form of release. Thanks for the visit and enjoy!
