Editorial Reviews

Some hospitals don’t have the 13th Floor. Santa Mira Hospital shouldn’t have had a third. It’s something a group of five college students discover when they enter an abandoned hospital on Halloween night only to discover that rumors about the place being haunted are very real. Running into other people who are trapped in the hospital, they uncover the truth about a vengeful spirit who is hell bent on making sure no one, except himself, gets out alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, exciting and makes you jump, October 25, 2005
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
Boo is a standard yarn of teenagers hanging out in a remote and haunted place, this time in an abandoned hospital. As in most of these types of movies, some make it out alive and some don't. There is inventiveness in the manner of deaths, and also the destruction (albiet temporarily) of ghosts. The movie made me jump on several occasions and two friends I know who saw it loved it and another who had to stop around the 30 minute mark as she was getting too creeped out. There is a fair amount of blood and gore in the unrated version I saw, but no nudity. The
acting was okay, if not enthusiastic, for a low budget horror with production values fairly high for this direct to video release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Synthesis, November 5, 2005
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
BOO is a fine horror film made by people who love film. A perfect synthesis of the interesting aspects of films like SESSION 9, THE RING, EVIL DEAD, and THE THING, Anthony Ferrante's debut film harbors deep psychological terrors as well as those of the flesh. Yes, the acting is lacking in places, and the endng is a bit convoluted, but Ferrante attempts grand things on a miniscule budget, every dollar of which is on the screen. Ferrante bears watching as a director. Let us hope he gets the money and script for another voyage into terror because for horror film fans (for whom recent trips into terror land have been seriously LACKING with crap like BOOGEYMAN, HOUSE OF WAX, et al, choking theaters and fans of horror film) I am sure it will be a worthwhile trip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tense, October 28, 2005
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
Tense. That's how you will feel through the bulk of this movie. It does an excellent job of maintaining the tension, keeping you wondering what crazy thing is going to happen next. Definitely some horror movie stereotypes too, it even plays on them. For example, before entering the haunted building, the lead character says something along the lines of "we are those stupid people", a not too subtle comment on how you always want to say "why do they do such dumb things?" when you watch these type movies. Yes, they do plenty of dumb things, and yes, you can make a pretty good guess what is going to happen next in many of the scenes, but you are wrong enough that that tension stays with you. There are some disturbing images and quite bit of gore. All in all I found it quite an entertaining movie.
