4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, exciting and makes you jump
Boo is a standard yarn of teenagers hanging out in a remote and haunted place, this time in an abandoned hospital. As in most of these types of movies, some make it out alive and some don't. There is inventiveness in the manner of deaths, and also the destruction (albiet temporarily) of ghosts. The movie made me jump on several occasions and two friends I know who saw it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Boo! Oh, sorry... saw it coming
While I tend to always take the horror movie genre with a grain of salt, this movie kind of irked me. I mean I read how the director/writer of this film is an editor at Cinescape, so I had hoped that the movie would not fall into some of the pitfalls that most of the recent horror films have fallen into. This is not true, there are pitfalls a plenty in this. There was...

The movie made me jump on several occasions and two friends I know who saw it loved it and another who had to stop around the 30 minute mark as she was getting too creeped out. There is a fair amount of blood and gore in the unrated version I saw, but no nudity. The
acting was okay, if not enthusiastic, for a low budget horror with production values fairly high for this direct to video release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Synthesis, November 5, 2005
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
BOO is a fine horror film made by people who love film. A perfect synthesis of the interesting aspects of films like SESSION 9, THE RING, EVIL DEAD, and THE THING, Anthony Ferrante's debut film harbors deep psychological terrors as well as those of the flesh. Yes, the acting is lacking in places, and the endng is a bit convoluted, but Ferrante attempts grand things on a miniscule budget, every dollar of which is on the screen. Ferrante bears watching as a director. Let us hope he gets the money and script for another voyage into terror because for horror film fans (for whom recent trips into terror land have been seriously LACKING with crap like BOOGEYMAN, HOUSE OF WAX, et al, choking theaters and fans of horror film) I am sure it will be a worthwhile trip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tense, October 28, 2005
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
Tense. That's how you will feel through the bulk of this movie. It does an excellent job of maintaining the tension, keeping you wondering what crazy thing is going to happen next. Definitely some horror movie stereotypes too, it even plays on them. For example, before entering the haunted building, the lead character says something along the lines of "we are those stupid people", a not too subtle comment on how you always want to say "why do they do such dumb things?" when you watch these type movies. Yes, they do plenty of dumb things, and yes, you can make a pretty good guess what is going to happen next in many of the scenes, but you are wrong enough that that tension stays with you. There are some disturbing images and quite bit of gore. All in all I found it quite an entertaining movie.

There was SO much potential at least I thought, but the movie falls flat rather quick. The pace of the film is very off setting and to be honest I was watching it on Scifi (my local video store doesn't have it), but yet I was kind of losing track of who is who and what they were doing in the haunted aslyum in the first place (example Meg and her brother. I also think the BIGGEST AAGGGHH moment was when the friend and the blonde hero girl (see can't remember names cause it was truly eh characters and characterization) were sitting on the lobby and talking, and the girl sees a shadow while the guy is looking at her, and she asks: "Did you see that?". NO HE WAS LOOKING AT YOU!
I just honestly thought it could of had been better, although the maggot clown scene was pretty good, it just needed a better film around it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Scarefest by Promising New Director, December 31, 2005
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
I am familiar with Anthony C. Ferrante's journalism from Fangoria Magazine, so I knew he had a grasp on horror. Who would have thought he would prove to be such a promising director?

In his directorial debut, Anthony proves a deft hand. The scares come fast and furious, and the effects are pretty amazing. There's plenty of humor in the film, and a surprising star turn by ET's mom, Dee Wallace Stone.

It's great fun. I have just one question: When can we expect a sequel?

I usually on a average try to fit in 3- 5 horror movie watches a week, I recently dropped a few bills going to the theatres to see "Doom" and "the Fog". Sadly disappointed in them, I rented Boo! because I had heard really good things. I have to say after watching this film that it is now on 1 of my fav's for the year. I loved it front to back and it succeeded in presenting a really haunting creepy story. I'm not sure what the other reviewers didnt like but I highly recommend this. Great job to the director and the screenwriter!! - the creepy setting really sets the mood

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good ghost story, December 26, 2006
By
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
The only things in the negative was that some of the acting wasn't that great, and the ending was a little forced. But, for a low budget film, they did an excellent job in making it creepy. The special effects were top notch. There are a few scares throughout that made me jump or squirm. This one is worth yout time and $$

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad...., July 27, 2006
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
When I saw this, I caught it on sci-fi about half way through. This was actually a good TV horror. There were actually some creepy scenes (mostly the scenes in the elevator). Overall what I saw was pretty good for a sci-fi movie, and I will probably buy it. If you like haunted house stories, you'll probably like this one....

4.0 out of 5 stars Boo is not just a scary word, September 24, 2007
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
.... it is a good low budget horror flick. as well as watching "Boo" for the first time tonight, i also watched "The Exorcist" tonight for about the third time as well. With "The Exorcist" being labled as the scariest movie of all time,i have to admit it is excellent but i just really do not get scared by any movie at all. However, this brings me to my review of "Boo". I sincerely applaud the filmakers for this film. For a low budget horror flick, they did very well indeed. There are some truly creepy and fun moments in this film. For a straight to DVD release, they truly could not do better in the horror genre. They did very well on the casting and great on the special effects. they created a great atmospheric feel to the movie. as far as i understand, it was shot on location in an actual hospital. Anyway, i think this horror flick's reputation will grow as the years go by. not the best of all time but good nonetheless.

3.0 out of 5 stars Throw "Sweet Insanity", "Madhouse" and "See No Evil" into a blender and pour out "Boo!", February 2, 2007
This review is from: Boo (DVD)
For a straight-to-dvd, this is not a bad horror movie. It is somewhere between "Sweet Insanity", "Madhouse" and "See No Evil". The acting is pretty bad, but it doesn't detract too much from the story. There are some good special effects here and there, along with some genuine scary parts.

The story takes too long to move along and gets confusing when it goes too many places at once. This is especially true towards the end. Trish Coren reminded me a little bit of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, which probably isn't the best thing for a horror movie. But, she's cute and with some acting lessons could go places. The same is not true of the rest of the cast. Even flawed, it's worth a rental.
