Hysterical laugh out loud Christian fiction with a touch of farce,
By Christina Lockstein "Christy's Book Blog" (Oconto Falls, WI USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Boo Who (The Boo Series #2) (Paperback)
Boo Who by Rene Gutteridge is the second book in the Boo series based in Skary, Indiana. Wolfe Boone has given up his lucrative writing career to sell used cars, and his fiancée Ainsley is embarking upon a new career herself. In the meantime, the town is trying to recover financially and emotionally from the loss of its tourism and find its new heart. This book is such a hoot (sorry couldn't help myself, once you read the book, you'll understand)! I was trying to explain the plot to my husband last night, and he found himself laughing out loud at the antics of the citizens of Skary. . There are so many subplots in this book, it's impossible to list them all, but Gutteridge handles them with flair. She does a terrific job of poking fun at the residents of a small town while still treating them with respect and love. She also does a wonderful job of bringing the Lord and how He works into the story without proselytizing. Nearly everyone in the book goes through a crisis of figuring out who they are and where they fit into God's plan with the message being that we all fit, no matter who we are. Skary finds its new heart and the reader sees that all things are made new

Rene Gutteridge is a - pardon the pun - a hoot!
She writes a great story and liberally sprinkles it with funny moments and charming characters. This is a warm Fall read. Grab a mug of warm cider, put enough logs on the fire and dive in to the world and zaniness of Skary, Indiana. You will want to come back and visit often. Enjoy!

Even Funnier Than Boo!,

Rene Gutteridge has an amazing way of combining humour, real (even if odd) people, a moral message and God all into one book. I couldn't put it down nor could I stop laughing. I just hope she continues writing about the people of Skary.

4 1/2 Stars...The Munsters Move to Mayberry,
By
This review is from: Boo Who (The Boo Series #2) (Paperback)
When I heard that "Boo" had a sequel, I laughed out loud. I couldn't wait to read more about the quirky town of Skary, Indiana.
Once again, Gutteridge throws us into a quaint and strange little place, full of quaint and strange little people. Ainsley Parker and Wolfe Boone are looking forward to their upcoming nuptials; a mysterious doctor has arrived in town; owls and cats and clone-like figures are prowling the darkness; and overweight Melb is trying to prepare herself for life with Oliver. The characters are memorable, sympathetic, and humorous. It's as though the Munsters moved into Mayberry. At times, the story will have you laughing; other times, it'll glue you to your seat. The true triumph of "Boo Who" is that it doesn't feel like a forced sequel, produced for sales quotes. It has an engaging plot that leads naturally from the first book, while still standing on its own two legs. It deals with the identity crises of a town and it's inhabitants. And it leaves room for another in the series--with a rumored title of "Boo Hiss." I'll be adding it to my wish list.

Skary doesn't. Skary, Indiana, that is.
Nobody in the town seems to know their purpose, including Wolfe `Boo' Boone, the famous horror writer whose newfound faith put the breaks on his career. As Wolfe struggles to find his place in the town as a car salesman, his fiancé, Ainsley, suddenly develops a serious case of stars in her eyes with the help of Wolfe's ex-editor. As Skary wavers on the verge of bankruptcy, the mayor has his own crisis, two brides race to complete wedding plans, and strange people begin to lurk among the woods. Screams fill the night air, filling Skary with the very thing Wolfe is trying to put behind him ... horror. Throw in the delightful humor of Rene Gutteridge and you have one compelling read! Many times I found myself laughing out loud at the escapades of Skary's residents. Rene weaves wonderfully fun characters through a charming plot with the underlining theme of purpose. I'd advice readers to read BOO, if they haven't already done so, before picking up this sequel, which has left me eagerly awaiting the third instalment, BOO HISS.

A great way to spend a flight!,

I fly a lot...and I'm always looking for a good read on those long hours spent in the air with several hundred strangers. Recently, flying across country, I grabbed my copy of Boo Who and, as soon as my fanny was in the aisle seat, I opened it...hoping for a little escape.
I got better than that. Three hours later, I landed. Four hours after that my layover was over and I was flying again. An hour later and I was landing again. Repeat five days later. And do you know what? It felt like a minute! This is one of the most delightful reads I've had the joy of diving in to in a long, long time. The characters are well thought out, they're zany, they're real. The plot just keeps us guessing and wondering and turning page after page. Rene, you've done yourself proud. Now, I'm a taking a 24 hour flight soon. Any new books? ~~Eva Marie Everson, Author, Speaker, Reader of Good Books

Full of small-town mystery, hijinks, and humor,

Welcome to Skary, Indiana. The setting of Rene Gutteridge's latest novel, BOO WHO, Skary is an unlikely town full of unlikely people doing unlikely things. But if you can get past all of that, you're in for a charming little tale in which the past must be uncovered in order to save the future.
The story opens and it's not long before everyone is in turmoil--- Thief the cat, the sheriff, the mayor, the townspeople, even Skary itself. Until recently, the town had prided itself on being home to the world's most popular horror writer, Wolfe "Boo" Boone, and therefore, the spookiest town around. Everyone got into the act with attractions including the Haunted Mansion restaurant and Sbooky's bookstore. Even the local "wildlife" --- the small town's population of cats outnumbers people --- fed into the theme. But a few weeks ago Wolfe Boone had a transformation. He almost died, became a Christian, and hung up his horror-writing cap. In fact, he stopped writing completely and is, instead, trying to sell cars down at Oliver Stepaphanolopolis's car lot. Now the town and its people don't know quite what to do with themselves. Without the tourism revenue Boone's fans brought into the community, Skary is on the verge of civic collapse. The stress has caused Mayor Wullisworth to break with reality. He's running around town in Bermuda shorts and sunglasses in the winter, insisting it's balmy outside. Missy Peoples, Skary's oldest and most despised resident, decides to take matters into her own hands. She determines that their cat population is the town's new meal ticket and buys ads in major newspapers advertising Skary as a cat lover's paradise. No one seems excited about this idea, much to her chagrin. Melb Cornforth is getting ready for her upcoming wedding to Oliver Stepaphanolopolis. But she has to lose four dress sizes to fit into her wedding gown. Things aren't looking good when she goes back for thirds at Ainsely Parker's Christmas dinner. Of course, no one would blame Melb for eating three helpings of Ainsley's food. The local domestic diva, daughter of the Sheriff and fiancée to Wolfe Boone, is on track to become the next Martha Stewart thanks to the cajoling of Wolfe's former editor. But a meltdown is waiting in the wings as she tries to plan her own wedding and take up Martha's mantle. Add to all of this some strange "ghost people" who started appearing around town, a phony psychologist who has more patients than he can handle, a pastor who has started charging for bulletins and coffee on Sunday mornings, and an owl that keeps asking the all-important question, "Who, Whooo," and you have a community for which the word "quirky" was invented. And maybe, that's just the way it's supposed to be. Because when Martin Blarty, yet another character in this community's cast, goes in search of something that will save Skary, what he finds reminds everyone who they are and why Skary exists in the first place. BOO WHO is technically a sequel to BOO, but it stands alone quite well. Just put the plausibility meter away and settle in some small-town mystery, hijinks, and humor. --- Reviewed by Lisa Ann Cockrel

This book is a wonderful continuation for the Boo series. There are lessons to be learned, and the writing is very quirky. These books remind me of a Christian version of Gilmore Girls. Everyone is in every body else's business and such, small town humor. My copy came in in very good condition.

Boo Who by Rene Gutteridge is the 2nd of 4 books in the Boo series. Skary, Indiana is known for its famous, reclusive author, Wolfe Boone. In the first book, Wolfe retired and proposed to the beautiful and charming Ainsley Parker. In Boo Who, Ainsley is busy preparing her own wedding with Wolfe, and friend Melb is planning a Valentines Day wedding with Oliver. Meanwhile, Wolfe has retired from writing and is now selling used cars with Oliver. Ainsley jumps at an opportunity to be the next "Martha Stewart" and begins to neglect preparations for her own wedding. Melb bought a wedding dress that she knows she'll never fit into. The Mayor has lost his mind and his friend is desparate to find out the history of the town. Stubborn Missy Peeples believes she can save the town with one final, valiant act. And last but not least, a stranger has moved to town, a Dr. Hass, and he's offering pop psychological advice to anyone that comes to his door.
The plot summary above is pretty much how the book is. Gutteridge cuts from scene to scene, each one building up the previoius with crazy characters involving themselves in implausible situations. The book really is a lot of fun, even if some of the assumptions by the Sherriff and his friends at the end was a little far-fetched, even for a comedy. Through it all, Wolfe Boone is the voice of reason as he tries to keep Ainsley from veering too far from her roots. If you've read some of Gutteridge's Occupaitonal Hazard series, then you'll really like the Boo series. It is a similar story, with quick witty writing, a touch of supsense, and a lot of comical characters. Gutteridge ties it all in with a strong spiritual message that isn't too preachy. |
