David Steinberg is now mostly known as a writer, director, actor and interviewer. However, "back in the day" he was primarily known a a wickedly funny and scathing stand-up comedian. This is a classic live-in-a-club recording from the early 1970s, with Steinberg working to a full house on a busy night. Yes, it has some iffy moments (the acoustics of some of these clubs were problematic, to say the least); that said, this is a great sample of the style and substance that made him a success.

David Steinberg followed his first and best album, "Disguised as a Normal Person", with another solid effort. There are plenty of references to events and commercials from the early 70's, so if you're not old enough to remember that time, a lot of his material will go right over your head. Those who remember that time will find plenty of laughs here, especially in his Watergate sketch and references to TV commercials of that era. The closing track, taken from his TV appearances, about a wacky psychiatrist, is a largely visual sketch, which makes its inclusion here a bit of an odd choice. But his rendition of the Shel Silverstein song, "Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball", is far and away the highlight of this disc.
I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Steinberg live recently in New Hope PA, at the Bucks County Playhouse. He is still going strong at age 70, funny as he ever was. Be sure to catch his show if you have the chance.
