Although it is great to have another track - a cover of Bob Dylan's Watchin' the River Flow - from the 1975-1992 Rolling Stones (i.e. the present line-up, but with Bill Wyman on bass), that is not what this record is primarily about. Until 1985 and his untimely death from a heart attack, Ian Stewart was Road Manager and keyboard player for the Rolling Stones, but he found time when not touring with the Stones to play Boogie-Woogie piano, appearing in clubs with long-standing friends such as Alexis Corner and Charlie Watts. In the late seventies, Stu founded the Boogie Woogie band Rocket 88, with Charlie, Alexis and himself as core members and numerous other musicians joining-in when and as they could, and it is in Rocket 88 that this tribute album has its roots. Ben Waters, the power behind this album, played with Rocket 88, and credits Stu with having willingly and generously taught him much of his own piano style.

The mainstays of this album are Ben Waters (ten tracks), sax player Willy Garnet (six tracks) and, once again, Charlie Watts (also on six tracks). In the Rocket 88 tradition, many others contribute on at least one track, several of those others being names as well known as Jools Holland, P J Harvey and the individual Rolling Stones. Jools Holland plays piano on four tracks, Hammond organ on two more, and on Make me a Pallet on your Floor puts in a great blues vocal after the style of the Georgia bluesman Blind Willie McTell. P J Harvey, a cousin of Waters, has Lonely Avenue almost to herself, multi-tracking her voice and playing sax, which she says she learnt from Willy Garnet and others in the days when Rocket 88, including Stu, would sometimes stay in her family home.

Heard a radio interview on New Zealand's National Radio linked from London, about how this CD was put together. Ben Waters was humble and passionate about this tribute to Stones pianist Ian Stewart. Got hooked on the dialog and then they played a track. OMG!!! such fun, boogie, upbeat-music! Made with joy and given with joy, music from music lovers for the simple pleasure of taking part. I ordered it from Amazon as soon as the interview had finished.
Do yourselves a favour and ride along with Ben Waters. Old Stu must be dancing in heaven when he sees what his old buddies have done to mark his passing.

I downloaded it as soon as the clock hit midnight and I was definitely not disappointed. The musicians that asked to appear on the album are all top notch. The way that Ben Waters' piano weaves in and out with Charlie Watts' drums seems so carefree and intricate at the same time. Especially on Roll Em' Pete.

Hearing Bill Wyman perform with the Stones again was a definite highlight. Reuniting the Stones' old rhythm section, (if only for one song), provides the type of back beat that the Stones have sadly missed since the early 90's.

Worried Life Blues is also something that people should take a listen to. Even experienced Stones fans might not know what Woody's voice sounds like so the novelty of hearing him sing will draw you in. But his voice is also perfectly suited to blues tracks and the way he duets with Keith, with the vocals weaving in and out is another gem.

Including Stu's live performance of Bring It On Home is the perfect way to close the album. The energy of the crowd and the beauty of the song is such a great way to cap things off!

For one track alone, this was worth the price...."Watching the River Flow...with Jagger. And then the other songs weren't shabby either. Love this cd.

I love a jazz piano and this guy can really play. Mick Jaegger sings but he doesn't measure up to the originals.

Every track on this album is great. My favorites are Dylan's "Watching the River Flow," with most of the Rolling Stones, and "Bring It on Home to Me," with Ian Stewart himself at the piano. I've listened to this album many times and never get tired of it.
