5.0 out of 5 stars My Personal Favorite
This is a great album. Even without te bonus tracks, it stands up well to the test of time. The reviews previous to mine tell alot about this forgotten jewl. But, they fail to mention that guitarist Henry Vestine was one of the all-time best white blues guitar players. Jimmi Hendrix used to go see him play to learn something from his style.More of a boogie and blues style...

COLLECTORS BEWARE OF PROBLEMS WITH SOUND QUALITY!

This CD is a gem it is true BUT SEVERAL CUTS HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THEM ,THEY ARE,"SONG # 5 == "TURPENTINE MOAN",Folks this cut was RE mastered with three times the bass of the other cuts on the CD,think of yourself standing next to the BASS amplifier to get an idea of what i mean. THE Cut # 9 ="MARIE LAVEAU" WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED WITH HUGE AMOUNTS OF BASS AGAIN .TOTALLY BASS DRENCHED SOUND HERE FOLKS ! Lastly is the CUT # 12 "BOOGIE MUSIC",WOW THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN SO EASY TO FIX WITH A LITTLE "EQ"(BASS TONE CONTROL).

"A TOTAL CLASSIC TOTALLY RUINED !

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THESE OLD CANNED HEAT ALBUMS TOP BE REISSUED ALSO BUT THIS CD IS A TOTAL DISSAPOINTMENT !

AKARMA should REMASTER it and put IT OUT WITH "NEWLY-RESTORED " VERSION STICKERED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CD.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE IS AKARMA'S REMASTERING OF THE OTHER CANNED HEAT CLASSIC "LIVING IN THE BLUES", WOW ! TALK ABOUT WONDERFULLLLLL ,PRISTINE MASTERING WITH NO OVER "BASSIFICATION"!

I HAVE WAITED FOR 30 YEARS TO HEAR THIS ON A GOOD SYSTEM WITH NO POPS OR CLICKS ,Now AKARMA has brought this wonderfull music back to life and current for future generations to enjoy.i wish i could say this about the "BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT"ALBUM BUT IT SIMPLY IS NOT T R U E ! ALL We can hope is that AKARMA WILL GET Their "A=KARMA" GOING IN THE RIGHT PLACE ! AND RE=PLACE THE "BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT ALBUM,WITH A NEWLY DONE VERSION THAT IS SONICALLY PLEASING AND CORRECT!

But, they fail to mention that guitarist Henry Vestine was one of the all-time best white blues guitar players. Jimmi Hendrix used to go see him play to learn something from his style.More of a boogie and blues style than blues purist Michael Bloomfield, but just as good. Young music fans and guitar players would do themselves well to become more than familiar with Vestine's fine work (Bloomfield is also a must).I have been listening to this album for over 30 years and I am still not tired of it.

Picked this up on cassette back in '87 and still have fond memories of this. I was 16 and had just discovered Canned Heat. I only knew the hit singles and about their appearance at Woodstock. Well, I wore this tape out from playing it so much. This is a great electric blues album. "On The Road Again" would be the band's first big hit and you still hear it on the oldies stations once in a while. "Amphetamine Annie" is a cool tune with a humorous and dry lyric from the charismatic Bob "The Bear" Hite while "My Crime" and "World in a Jug" are more old school blues that work very well. Like "On the Road Again", "An Owl Song" has Alan Wilson's distinctive vocals and harmonica but with a horn section while "Marie Laveau" is an instrumental with some great solos. "Fried Hockey Boogie" is a long jam where the entire band gets a turn to show off and while it's very good, you have to check out the version on Woodstock Two which is twice as long and just cooks the whole time. "Evil Woman" and "Whiskey Headed Women No. 2" are pretty cool as well. It's a shame that this is out of print on CD. If you're interested and want a taste, this is certainly worth the download or you could pick up Best of Canned Heat or Hooker N' Heat which are both killer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burn the Coal Through a Smoke Stack and Can the Heat, July 12, 2009
This review is from: Boogie With Canned Heat (Audio CD)
Bluesy sticky bass warm rock songs to listen to by yourself in a cabin or a smokey old bar. Canned Heat are disgustingly forgotten in comparison to acts like Cream and the Rolling Stones. In a time where rock music was getting harder, heavier, and faster Canned Heat were grubbing the grooves with the sure and steady figures their songs so often lend. The other end of the musical spectrum wasn't all that different, the psychedelic movement entwined with much of the harder end groups, and yet Canned Heat still didn't fit or connect in between.

Musically Canned Heat aren't gods sent down from the heavens, mistakes are present, but the variety of sounds herd leans one toward accepting 98% is fair enough. It's an album that flows so naturally and doesn't rely on any gimmicky melodies that persevere this with time. (So again not the studio perfection)

Music that can graciously flirt with the poorly lit corners of the room (thinking of the track "Turpentine Moan"). Rock music when done right can really attract a much broader audience from all corners of the earth. Cept this album blurs the line of 60's its psychedelic contemporaries and it's down to earth blues influences it goes ahead and closes the door behind its guest.

The Chattering tingling tune "On the Road Again", the reason why Canned Heat always amaze me. That track alone is worth the price of this album. The falsettos I hear in this song seem to make me think Josh Homme ,singer for Queens of the Stone Ag,e could go on to make a great tribute to this band. The falsettos are eerily similar. Anyways... You get it all here, "World in A Jug" soothing yet rocking, slight sustain but never restrained guitar, blue battering bass, I could go on for ages.

"Whiskey Headed Women pt.2s" bass line seems so familiar to The Beatles "Drive My Car", but by they treat themselves to tone one could imagine in The Guess Who's cavalry of presets.

Canned Heat have stood the test of time musically, though its polar opposite music mixtures and truthful easy going nature isn't always the most rewarding for the casual listener. If you're young and starting to delve deeper into musics past this is a gem worth polishing.
