Book Description

February 19, 1998
"Everyone is blessed with One Special Thing," says Eddie Adams, who is endowed with a rather stunning piece of equipment that enables him to become a shining star in the world of adult entertainment. Deprived of love and respect by his family, Eddie--renaming himself Dirk Diggler--conquers the world of porn while keeping his innocence intact. As the turbulent Seventies become the hedonistic Eighties, Dirk's career goes into a tailspin--but he is rescued by the safety net of the extended family created by hard-core film director Jack Horner.

Paul Thomas Anderson's screenplay for Boogie Nights is exemplary in its ability to interweave the multiple character strands into a culminating narrative. Like the Roman dramatist Terence, who said that "nothing human is alien to me," Anderson has taken on what is regarded as one of the sleaziest sides of life and infused it with an aching humanity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too small, January 9, 2000
This review is from: Boogie Nights (Paperback)
I loved this movie, and I often go out and buy the screenplays after watching a movie of this caliber. I would have given this book 5 stars if not for one small problem, while incredibly well written, it looks as though someone merely took the script and shrunk it down to size. The writing is incredibly small, almost impossible to read. If you can get past this small quarrel, than you're in for a real treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best screenplays ever!, March 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Boogie Nights (Paperback)
P.T. Anderson has made the best film of 1997 and here is the best original screenplay to it. Reading it, you'll see that P.T. Anderson is one of the greatest writers today and successfully communicates the ups and downs of the wild 70's boogie nights. It was obvious from his first film, "Hard Eight," that we were in the presence of a natural-born filmmaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie Of 1997-1998, August 23, 1998
This review is from: Boogie Nights (Paperback)
I knew even before I saw the movie that I would love it. And I was right. It is one of my favorites. Paul Thomas Anderson is at his best--he is one of the most promising directors of the next century. This movie is important because he doesn't show the case for or the case against this family of pornographers and drug users--he shows them as people, and lets us make our own opinions about them.
