Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Jenkins (Emyl Jenkins's Southern Hospitality, Crown, 1994) has fashioned a reader for those interested in the place of traditions in family life. In her foreword, she says that traditions are what link us to our past and bind us together in the present. She has compiled an anthology of stories, poems, and quotes that show how traditions enhance our holiday celebrations and day-to-day family life. Included are excerpts from works by a score of well-known authors ranging from Emily Dickinson to James Baldwin, Kahlil Gibran, and Ann Bradstreet. There are traditional poems and stories from Native American nations and past and recent immigrant populations. Although most of the collection consists of contemporary voices, Jenkins has included letters, newspaper articles, and book excerpts from the 18th and 19th centuries. Not a scholarly work, this anthology is meant for browsing. Recommended for public libraries.
