About the Author

Stan & Jan Berenstain began writing and illustrating books for children in the early 1960s, when their two sons Michael and Leo were young readers themselves. They lived on a hillside in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a place that still looks a lot like Bear County, where they could see deer, wild turkeys, rabbits, squirrels, and woodchucks through their studio window almost every day—but no bears. The Bears lived inside their hearts and minds.

The Berenstains' sons are all grown up now. Michael worked as an illustrator with his mother, Jan, to create new Berenstain Bears books.  There are Berenstain grandchildren who can even draw pretty good bears. With more than three hundred books in print, along with videos, television shows, and even Berenstain Bears exhibits at major museums, it's hard to tell where the Bears end and the Berenstains begin!

These are some of my favorites. I love the older Berenstain stories better than the newer ones. They have so much more humor and character. I couldn't wait to share them with my kids. It had them all laughing. I'm surprised at the negative review. Where is their sense of humor? This is great fun that you and your kids will love unless you're a stick in the mud :) or you take them too seriously.

The book is good and the stories are long but pretty simple (easy for a 4-year-old to follow). The rhyming and repetition are wonderful tools to help my son learn to read, and the stories are very silly (Papa Bear is a great example of "what not to do").

The darker stories can be a little scary to the kiddos, but I've found if we focus on another aspect in the story (like how the bears lost their tools (for lack of a better word), or the excitement of all the little passageways in the tree), my boy is still intrigued (though snuggling close--a bonus, I think!) and doesn't have nightmares.

This was another book we checked out at the library for a while before we decided to add it to our own. We definitely enjoy reading it together.

Really great compilation of books. None of them are really cannon with the Berenstain Bear family series and contain what I consider prototypes of the characters. They are still great reads and really do make good beginner reader books. The first three stories follow a similar format of lessons/discussion between Papa and Small Bear and are pretty amusing in how all of Papa's attempts at teaching his son tend to backfire on him, they still get the message through. The next two stories use simpler sentences/phrases and are really the best to start with for a beginner reader, especially Bears in the Night. All the books make great use of rhythm and/or rhyme that makes reading fun and easier to remember. I grew up on the Berenstain Bear family, so this was a must-have item for our bookshelf.

I purchased this book specifically because it was a hardback and a collection which is hard to find. My daughter and I love reading the Berenstain Bears Books and it is was nice to find a Beginner Book. We have read many of the later books and I was surprised when I learned that this collection only had Sister Bear in 2 of the stories. Yet, these early years of the bear family stories are just as entertaining and maybe more humerous. In The Bike Lesson and the Bears' Picnic Papa Bear is more of a bumbling and stubborn bear and the bears are not as plump as illustrated in the later books. My daughter loves these stories even the ones without Sister Bear. I do recommend this book, the stories are fun and perfect for an early reader.

Have always loved the Berenstain Bear books. This is a nice find with so many of their stories in one book. The stories aren't so long that the kids loose interest, yet they are not too simple that the books are out grown quickly. This is a nice grandma book, one to have on hand when the grandkids come to stay. Enjoyable for everyone.

This book has a mixture of stories you can read to the child and stories the child can read to you. The variety of reading levels makes it extremely useful for teaching reading. The stories and illustrations keep the child's attention. The words get used over and over to reinforce reading skills while not being boring.

This is a collection of the older Berenstain Bear stories so the illustrations are different, the stories don't follow the same format as they do today, and Sister Bear isn't a character yet. If you buy this collection thinking they will be the same style as today you will probably be disappointed. For those who love BB and wanted the classic stories this is a great collection. My 4-year old girls looked at the illustrations at first & were confused but absolutely love them now since the stories & illustrations are so silly. In one story Papa Bear teachers Brother what NOT to do when riding a bike therefore he falls a lot which of course children love. In other stories he teaches them water safety, again by teaching brother what NOT to do which is a funny way of teaching since he gets a lot of "boo-boos." Some of the stories are nice and long, others are shorter so you can pick & choose depending on the night- can be good for early readers as well. Almost every children's book has some sort of serious lesson, I'm glad we go this one, kids need to laugh and have fun too.

For some reason I was never introduced to the Berenstain Bears as a kid. I didn't know what to expect when my wife and I picked up this book for our 2-year-old daughter. I was pleasantly surprised to discover we had a winner on our hands. It's been a few months now and this book has become my daughter's go-to bedtime book nearly every night. The stories are fairly funny and the illustrations are well drawn. There are many details in the illustrations that my daughter and I like to examine and discuss together which allows me to introduce her to more words and concepts.

One word of caution. A couple of the stories in this collection might be a little scary for some young kids. My daughter is a bit of a chicken and was initially frightened by the story of the owl hooting in the night. After a few readings, she finally was able to enjoy this story without issue.

Overall a very good collection of stories that your child will likely want to return to again and again.
