This review is from: The Book of Boxes: The Complete Practical Guide to Design and Construction (Hardcover)
While the photographs alone make this book worth the effort, it really doesn't live up to it's name. Maybe this is why the book is out of print. It starts with all the philosophy about boxes, what they are and what they aren't. This is nothing new.It then goes into very short instructions on how to build numerous boxes. It's not that the instructions are vague or the drawings poor, it just doesn't flow right when it comes to helping someone build the boxes. If you are a beginning woodworker I would recommend several other books such as Building Beautiful Boxes with your Band Saw by Lois Keener Ventura. This is the type of book that lays it out well and really helps. If you are an intermediate or advanced woodworker, these designs and processes may be right on target and this book it one you should make sure to add to your library. The pictures alone help me give this book a little higher score. They are beautiful photos of beautiful pieces. Go forth and maketh thee sawdust!

Purchased this book online thru Amazon from a company called Flying Covers Book. The book arrive quicker than I expected from the UK. Book of Boxes by Crawford, Andrew is a very informative, and easy to follow book showing the techniques and methods for making beautiful wooden boxes for holding various personal treasures. There are many easy to understand diagrams, pictures, and instructions.

This book was recommended to me by a professional woodworker how published own books as well. For people like me it is an excellent description step by step how to make small and nice boxes. In the description mashines like a router or table saw are used for making the chests. In the appendix there are some outstanding examples which are good for your own motivation.

The Book of Boxes is one of the best of its kind - maybe the best. There is some level of skil needed but if you have some tools and rudinmentary skils Crawford can get you started on one of ten designs from simple to complex. Each project is beautifully photographed with copius design and construction notes. Additional chapters on veneer, marquetry, inlay, and finishing are also helpful. He closes the book with a gallery of boxes that are sure to inspire. Really a nice book and useful for any woodworker.
