Virginia’s extreme sound nihilists PIG DESTROYER deliver savage grindcore that is both intentionally confrontational and thoroughly pummeling. PIG DESTROYER formed in 1997, when vocalist J.R. Hayes and guitarist Scott Hull decided to unite in their efforts to create utterly destructive grindcore. The trio began rehearsing and immediately found that their common musical interests produced ... Read more in Amazon's Pig Destroyer Store

4.0 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) "Book Burner" is face-melting! October 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Quite a lot has changed during the intolerably-long five-year wait for Pig Destroyer's new album, 2012's "Book Burner," the fifth full-length release of the band's career. For one, the Virginia/Washington D.C.-based collective, who had long been known the world-over as being a three-piece, recruited a new, fourth member in Blake Harrison, a self-described "noisemaster." (Admittedly, he does very little to enhance the group's sound, but the electronics and noise bits that he occasionally brings to the table are undeniable.) And secondly, longtime drummer Brian Harvey left the fold in 2011 after more than ten years of service. But anybody worried that the band's bottom-end (they do not use a bassist) would suffer without Harvey was sadly, sadly mistaken. Adam Jarvis (of Misery Index fame), who was enlisted also in 2011, proves here that he is every-bit-as-much the absolutely godly drummer extraordinaire that Harvey is. His foot speed is blistering fast, and his dexterity is absolutely terrific. As such, the Pig Destroyer trademark grindcore assault that you grew up with remains pure, unbridled, bludgeoning, and nihilistic today.

If you like your extreme metal teaming with scorching riffs (that are influenced equally by death metal, hardcore, and thrash), merciless blast beats, simple, moshable hardcore breakdowns, and some of the most brutal and atonal vocals this side of Barney Greenway, then you definitely came to the right place. Brevity is also practiced here with expertise, as P.D. tear through these nineteen tracks in just under thirty-two minutes. And they fly through the first nine songs in just ten minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Salvation Lies Within The Riffage December 11, 2012
By Francis
Format:Audio CD
Pig Destroyer manages to rise above their peers consistently - and they have oh so many utterly forgettable, mediocre peers in this genre - because they understand and appreciate the album as a form of art, something I deeply respect. Hell, it sure took them long enough to release their latest masterpiece - but clearly the wait was worth it. It's been 5 years since Phantom Limb ripped us eardrum from eardrum, and the mighty Pig Destroyer returns in peak condition with Big Burner, arguably their best record yet. From a production standpoint, it's by their most full sounding recording. The band knows how to build atmosphere with creepy introductions and vocal samples that go beyond being superfluous additions (see "The Bug" and its intro featuring Larry King reading from Henry Miller's novel "Tropic of Cancer"). The artwork on Book Burner, like with their last two releases, manages to disturbingly convey the sense of malice and foreboding that awaits your headphones once you dig in. JR Hayes' lyrics are some of the most literary and disturbing in music. Sure he's telling horrifying stories but the point is he's telling stories not just shouting murderous non sequitors (for God's sake the guy attached a short story "The Atheist" to the deluxe edition - do albums come with a more "complete package"?).

Of course where Pig Destroyer earns their money are within the ever-expanding confines of Scott Hull's legendary riff collection. Quite simply, it doesn't get a lot better in the heavy metal riff department than this. I'm consistently amazed by how excellent his arrangements are and how he manages to use 15 riffs in a two minute song and somehow make them all stand out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome February 18, 2013
By Řyvind

Best Pig Destroyer yet. Best songs are The Diplomat, Book Burner, Baltimore Strangler, and Burning Palm. The CD also contains a little booklet, a (long) short story about an atheist trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic hellhole of a theocratic world, a world in which the book burners (religious fundamentalists) are in power. I enjoyed that, great little book.
A must for all god-hating, atheist grindcore-fans everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMFG! This cd annihilates! February 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Been a Pig Destroyer fan for a long time, wasn't too sure about Phantom Limb, it had it's moments, but the boys in Pig Destroyer return to form with an absolutely devastating and brutal attack of grindcore! So if you're into this stuff, crank up your speakers to LOUD and blast your eardrums into oblivion. This album is a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best metal album of 2012 December 24, 2012

Pure insanity set to music, but smart too. And being only half an hour long it doesn't wear out its welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pig Destroyer November 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is without a doubt one of the best metal albums of 2012. Pig Destroyer remain brutal as they've always been. Adam Jarvis drumming on this album gave me high hopes that this would be a good album. Jason Netherton (Misery Index) and Katherine Katz (Agoraphobic Nosebleed) also lend great vocals. The bonus cd of cover songs are really great too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Burner November 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Terrifyer has always remained my favorite. Even after listening to Book Burner I still feel the same. Does that mean Book Burner is bad. Absolutely not. This album truly destroys everything in it's path.

As far as musically, Pig Destroyer have really tightened up. It's not as insanely chaotic as Terrifyer, but still carries the signature sound the band is known for. The new drummer is also a welcome addition to the band's sound.

As for other random things about the album: The production is clean, the deluxe edition comes with a story that goes on for several pages(which I have not gotten around to read yet), and has a bonus cd of covers.

Buy It!!!!!
