Book Description

August 25, 2005
New in Paper
See the sky as you never have before. Using a series of his awe-inspiring images, photographer and scientist John Day--who has a Ph.D. in cloud physics and is known round the world as "The Cloudman"--introduces us to earth's great skyscape. His spectacular portfolio of pictures captures a variety of cloud forms and shapes, ranging from cottony-soft cumulus clouds to frightening, whirling funnels, as well as a number of optical effects, such as coronas and halos, seen in the heavens above. A magnificent cloud chart; an explanation of clouds formation; hints on forecasting, observing, and photographing clouds; and his "Ten Reasons to Look Up" teach us to use our inner eye to really perceive those familiar fleeting forms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art for Artists, August 3, 2005
By
This review is from: The Book of Clouds (Hardcover)
We bought this book after having looked through it in a store -- we thought we'd look at several before purchasing to compare the images and text. After pouring over 5 books of comparable content, Day's book was the clear favorite because of the variety and quality of images, the skillful organization, and the easy writing style that accompanied the images.

An excellent book for those with an interest in weather -- and for an artist searching for the archetypes from which interpretations can be drawn.

Beautiful images!

I first saw this in a library and checked it out. I ended up buying my own copy. The photos are a wide variety and large. Some of them are slightly grainy, but not cheesy. Many of them are merely described as "clouds" instead of their classification, but the variety is what is significant for this volume. Not a must-have for meteorologists, but good book for weather hobbyists and certainly good for the coffee table.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine tribute to clouds by a veteran weatherman, April 1, 2003
By
MR G F RICHARDSON (Kenilworth, Cape South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Book of Clouds (Hardcover)
The many photos making up the bulk of this book (some already seen on his popular website), are presented in a structured way that shows their features and beauty and significance. Dr John Day (know as cloudman) has been practising and teaching about meteorology for longer than most of us have been around. His text is brief, and his style is aimed both at beginners and those who already have some understanding and interest in weather. His chapter on the history of the naming of clouds make up the final section.
