This review is from: A Book of Colors: A Baby's First Sign Book (Baby's First Signs) (Board book)
My son was 18 mos. old when they began teaching him sign language in head start (because he was not talking yet). At that time he could recognize all the colors, but could not verbalize them, and his teachers did not have a color sign book, so I ordered this one. My son was very eager to learn the color signs and made me teach them all in one sitting. Surprisingly, he picked them all up and remembered them from that one time, but he improvised the signs a little. The signs for some colors are a little harder--having to put your fingers in positions that toddlers may not have the ability to do. For example, for yellow you form the letter "y" and shake your hand. The letter "y" may be a little difficult for little hands. But, since we were only using it for our personal use, I didn't see a problem in his improvisations--I knew what he meant. And, he loved that he could "tell" us the colors. The slight difficutly is not by fault of the book, the colors are great and many are covered (including tan and gray), it is just that some younger children may not be ready for the more detailed signs. Also, each page is entirely colored in varying shades of that one color, so it is great just for teaching colors and for associating the sign with the color. The pictures of the hands signing in this book are not the best, but they can be figured out. It is the best color sign book I have found, although there aren't many out there. My son can now say the colors, but still uses the signs also. |
