Beatifully illustrated AND written book of Celt lore,

I first bought this book on an "ancestral pilgrimage" of sorts to Ireland over 20 years ago. As you can probably imagine by looking at the picture of the cover, the artwork drew my attention immediately. Jim Fitzpatrick may be the best modern-day Celtic artist going, and the Book of Conquests is packed with full-page art drawn in some of the most glorious colors imaginable. One reviewer likens Fitzpatrick's work to Hal Foster's (of "Prince Valiant" fame), but I can see a bit of Frank Frazetta in there, too. The side panels are very true to ancient Celt culture as well. The art alone is worth buying this.
But don't fail to read the text. Fitzpatrick has done a terrific job of taking a centuries-old tale and bringing it to life, and it matches the pictures very well. It's a great story in the Irish tradition and should be read if only to place the art in context, but you'll probably get more out of it than just that. There's an old, old saying about the Irish that "all their songs are sad and all their wars are merry" (we DO love a good battle). The Book of Conquests brings that saying to life. I've never read anything quite like this and can't recommend it highly enough. |
