I bought this book as a request from a soldier in Afghanistan, they wanted to identify some of the stars in the sky. This one was very descriptive and pictures were good. A small way to say thank you to the USA soldiers

This is a nice little book. Easy to read and nice to look at. It does have one major problem, though. It says that astrologers (not astronomers) don't recognize or take into account something called "precession of the equinox". A phenomena where the signs of astrology become misaligned with the constellations they were named after. My wife is an astrologer and I can tell you that this statement is wrong.
Before precession was discovered, there was only what we now call the "sidreal" zodiac - in which the signs correlate with the constellations. But when precession was discovered, astrologers developed what is called the "tropical" zodiac to account for the changes. The Tropical zodiac DOES mean the signs move out of alignment with the constellations, but this is intentional since western astrologers associate the signs more closely with the seasons that with the actual stars themselves. Many people say astrologers didn't adjust for precession but that is exactly wrong. Ironically, because astrologers DID adjust, this misconception was born. Signs are not constellations. Any astrologer can tell you that. |
