Very Different and Delicious,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Book of Cookies (Paperback)
I've had this book for some time, however, it was not until late last year that I started using it, and what a gem! These are not your average cookies, these are very different. I have a number of favorites, which were big hits at my gatherings. One of the cookies called for Passion Fruit which is only available in my area for a few weeks a year and very expensive, but it was well worth it. This is not a cookie book with basic sugar cookies recipes, these recipes may take a little effort in design but she gives you lovely step by step color photos. Her cookies were so good that I hunted down an old cake book of hers through Amazon and was also very pleased with that as well. If you are looking for something different- this is definitly a book for you.

Great variety of sweet and savory treats,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Book of Cookies (Paperback)
This book has a great variety of recipes, most of them sweet, but a few of them savory. I tried the chocolate crisps at my New Year's Day family get together and everyone loved them! I also want to try the blue cheese nibbles, onion and garlic twists, and the sesame sticks. The book has pictures and relatively good instructions. My only complaint is that when I made the chocolate crisps, the instructions said "3 egg whites, beaten" and I didn't know how long I was supposed to beat them! So I just did it until they were frothy. Anyway...this is a very cool book. Lots of variety! Try it! It'll give you great ideas!

This review is from: The Book of Cookies (Paperback)
This is a nice little book of cookies, from a really great cookbook series. It is incredibly well illustrated, and the directions are very clear. The explanations are good, and there are around 90 recipes included. There are lots of color photographs for you to look at. It is a really nice book. Some of my favorite cookie recipes are in the this book. There are great recipes for Filigree Cookies, Oznei Haman, and Lime Cremes. There is also a good recipe for Lebkuchen Heart (a nice German Gingerbread cookie), as well as savory recipes.... such as cheese straws, and, get this, curry cookies! I bought this book for $12... and seeing it here at this price, I kick myself!! Buy this book...

Unspecific instructions and questionable proportions,
By Lhooq "RMutt" (ON, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Book of Cookies (Paperback)
I found all three of the recipes that I made from this book to be unsatisfactory. I'm a novice but not incompetent baker and the last recipe I made, the gingerbread men, was not very good. The dough was so dry and crumby that I doubted the accuracy of the proportions of dry and wet ingredients. I had to improvise to fix this problem by adding an additional egg and doubling the butter. She lists only "molasses" in this recipe without specifying what kind of molasses - I used table molasses but the cookies were pale, so I think she should have specified "blackstrap molasses" if that's what she meant. An experienced baker may have intuitively known this, but I didn't. Also, her Royal Icing didn't provide instructions on how to make a firmer or more liquid icing - not having used glycerin before, I wasn't sure how to vary its quantity in relation to the other ingredients. I've made two other recipes from the book which I also found disappointing. I think there are probably better cookie books out there.
